CEO West Bengal Manoj Agarwal Prepares for Upcoming Elections

In West Bengal, the political landscape is shifting as the state gears up for its upcoming elections scheduled for April 23 and 29, 2026. This marks a significant moment as the Election Commission has reduced the polling phases from the previous seven or eight to just two, a change that reflects ongoing efforts to streamline the electoral process.

Manoj Agarwal, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, has been instrumental in overseeing these developments. He recently stated, “Elections are being held in two phases in West Bengal after many years,” highlighting the importance of this transition. The final electoral roll, published on February 28, revealed a total of 7,04,59,284 voters, with a staggering 60 lakh names still pending adjudication.

The current situation is critical as the first supplementary list of disputed voters is expected to be published today. Out of the 60 lakh cases under judicial review, 29 lakh adjudications have already been completed, indicating significant progress in resolving voter disputes.

In a bid to ensure a fair electoral process, the Election Commission has taken decisive actions, including the removal of 73 Returning Officers (ROs) in West Bengal. This move underscores the Commission’s commitment to conducting free and fair elections, a sentiment echoed by Agarwal, who emphasized the integrity of the electoral process.

Additionally, the Special Observer, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed to oversee the elections, ensuring that all procedures are followed meticulously. The Chief Justice, Sujoy Pal, has also been involved in the judicial aspects of the electoral process, further solidifying the framework for a transparent election.

The SIR (Systematic Voter’s Registration) exercise, announced on October 27 last year, aimed to refine the electoral roll, leading to the deletion of 58,20,899 names in the draft roll. This exercise was crucial in preparing for the upcoming elections and ensuring that the electorate is accurately represented.

As the state approaches the election dates, observers are keenly watching how these changes will impact voter turnout and the overall electoral atmosphere. The focus remains on maintaining the integrity of the electoral process while addressing the complexities of voter adjudication.

With the countdown to polling day underway, the actions of Agarwal and the Election Commission will be pivotal in shaping the electoral landscape of West Bengal. The next steps will be closely monitored as the state prepares for a significant political event.
