Harbhajan Singh on Gautam Gambhir’s Coaching Style
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has expressed his bewilderment regarding the ongoing criticism directed at Gautam Gambhir since he assumed the role of national head coach. Singh acknowledges that Gambhir’s direct approach, which often involves conveying what he terms as “bitter truths,” may not be agreeable to everyone. In a podcast interview, Harbhajan described Gambhir as a passionate individual who openly expresses his feelings, a trait that can sometimes cause discomfort for others.
During Gambhir’s tenure as coach, India achieved significant victories, securing the T20 World Cup, the Champions Trophy, and the Asia Cup. However, the Test team experienced notable setbacks, including substantial defeats against Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The losses against New Zealand and South Africa were particularly impactful, as they were whitewashes on home ground. These results have led to considerable scrutiny and sharp commentary from both fans and experts regarding Gambhir’s management of the squad, especially the Test team.
Harbhajan questioned the tendency to blame the coach when a team underperforms. He emphasized that the Gambhir he knows is a deeply passionate person who consistently prioritizes the team’s interests. This perspective aims to decode the individual behind what is often perceived as a combative public image.
Gambhir’s Demeanour and Philosophy
Recalling Gambhir’s early days with the team, Harbhajan mentioned that he was initially an introvert. Gambhir gradually formed a close circle of friends within the dressing room after becoming more settled. His early companions included Virender Sehwag, Amit Mishra, and Munaf Patel. Harbhajan noted that he was unsure if these friendships still persist, but presumed they do.
Harbhajan described Gambhir as a “top guy” who is very straightforward. He elaborated that while Gambhir might articulate things that some find harsh, his words often represent an unvarnished truth. The former spinner suggested that many individuals struggle to accept such directness, and Gambhir’s tone might contribute to the perception of him being a challenging personality.
Despite these perceptions, Harbhajan urged against judging Gambhir superficially. He asserted that Gambhir is a brilliant individual with a profound understanding of how cricket should be played. Harbhajan is confident that as a coach, Gambhir will instill a singular philosophy in his team: “Play To Win.” He believes that Gambhir would accept a defeat if the team’s intention was to secure a victory, but would likely not tolerate a team that aims for a draw.
Optimism for Shubman Gill’s Captaincy
Beyond his defence of Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh also expressed strong optimism regarding the future of Shubman Gill, who has taken on the captaincy for India’s Test and ODI teams. Harbhajan views Gill as the ideal candidate to lead the nation, despite recent statistical outcomes that might suggest otherwise.
Under Gill’s leadership, India has experienced ODI series losses against Australia, New Zealand, and England. However, Harbhajan maintains his belief that Gill will ultimately achieve success in his captaincy role. He stressed that success is not an immediate outcome and pointed to Gill’s performance in England the previous year, where India drew a series 2-2, as evidence of his leadership and batting prowess.
Harbhajan highly rates Gill, noting that he scored more runs than any other player during that period and that the team displayed strong commitment. He acknowledged that there will be periods of both success and struggle, but emphasized Gill’s qualities as a top cricketer with an excellent cricketing mind. Furthermore, Harbhajan highlighted Gill’s character as a fantastic human being, suggesting that this aspect significantly contributes to his leadership capabilities.
