India’s Olympic Ambitions and Talent Search
On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced India’s ambition to become a strong contender for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. This declaration was accompanied by plans for a nationwide talent identification programme. The initiative aims to enhance India’s participation across various sporting disciplines.
The proposed talent hunt will focus on children aged five to 15 years, seeking to discover sporting prospects throughout the country. Identified individuals are slated to receive specialised training, with the goal of developing them into world-class athletes. This effort is part of a broader strategy to improve India’s sporting presence on the global stage.
Narendra Modi highlighted the progress made through existing programmes such as the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), which was launched in 2014. He noted that India’s performance in sports is improving, and the country is making significant strides in various sporting events, including the Khelo India Games, University Games, Beach Games, and Winter Games.
The Prime Minister also pointed out areas where India needs to improve its participation. With approximately 40 disciplines and nearly 350 events in the Olympics, he expressed concern that India does not compete in at least two-thirds of these events due to qualification challenges. The goal for 2036 is to achieve participation in at least three-fourths of the events.
Developing a Stronger Athletic Pipeline
The nationwide talent hunt is designed to identify promising athletes from every corner of the country. These young individuals will receive special training to help them become world-class competitors. The initiative is expected to leverage Artificial Intelligence for fitness battery tests, assessing areas such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, speed, agility, flexibility, balance, and movement.
This approach draws parallels with China’s preparations for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where they significantly strengthened their presence in disciplines like boxing, canoeing, and archery. For India, key areas targeted for expansion under this plan include aquatics, cycling, rowing, and gymnastics. Aquatics alone will feature 55 medal events at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, while rowing will have 45 medals across 15 events, and cycling will offer 66 medals across 22 events.
The new initiative will also build upon the existing Khelo India Talent Development (KITD) scheme. This scheme identifies promising athletes and provides a pathway to Khelo India Academies, national camps, and other elite-level programmes. According to the Sports Ministry, India currently has 1,067 Khelo India Centres nationwide.
A government source indicated that a wider talent search could uncover children with sporting potential who might otherwise not have the opportunity to pursue competitive sports. The belief is that basic tests can help identify individuals who are naturally good at sports but may not yet be aware of their capabilities.
Hosting International Sporting Events
Beyond the 2036 Olympic Games bid, Narendra Modi also called for India to become a more prominent destination for major international sporting competitions. He posed the question, “Why should global sports events not be held in India?”
The Sports Ministry, led by Mansukh Mandaviya, has already prepared a calendar that includes 11 international competitions scheduled to take place in India over the next six months. This schedule features events such as the Badminton World Championships, which are set to begin in India on Monday.
India is also preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The formal handover for these games took place during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Glasgow Games. Ahmedabad is also in contention to stage the 2036 Olympics, with the outcome of India’s bid expected to be known in 2029.
The 2030 Commonwealth Games are anticipated to feature major sporting disciplines alongside traditional Indian sports, with the goal of strengthening India’s medal prospects. The Narendra Modi Stadium complex is among the key venues for the Ahmedabad Games. This event will provide another opportunity to develop sporting infrastructure and identify emerging talent, further building the pipeline of athletes for the 2036 Olympics.
