Government Orders Increased LPG Production
The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced a 25-day inter-booking period to avoid hoarding and black marketing. This statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas underscores the urgency of the situation as the government responds to rising concerns over LPG availability amidst global supply chain disruptions.
In recent weeks, the conflict in West Asia has significantly impacted the global fuel supply chain, prompting the government to take decisive action. The Ministry has ordered oil refineries to ramp up LPG production specifically for domestic use, ensuring that households can access this essential resource without undue delay.
Challenges in Supply Chain
Despite these efforts, the situation on the ground remains challenging. Reports indicate that LPG supply disruptions have led to refill delays ranging from 2 to 8 days in Mumbai. This has raised concerns among residents who rely on LPG for cooking and heating. The government’s measures aim to alleviate these delays, but the effectiveness of these actions is yet to be fully realized.
Additionally, the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has been completely halted, which has adversely affected hotels and restaurants. P C Rao, a representative from the hospitality sector, noted that “only about 10% of hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru received their LPG supply today.” This stark statistic highlights the extent of the crisis facing non-domestic users of LPG.
Prioritizing Essential Services
In a bid to manage the limited supply effectively, the Ministry has prioritized non-domestic supplies from imported LPG for essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. This strategic allocation is intended to ensure that critical services continue to operate without interruption, even as the overall supply of LPG remains constrained.
To further streamline the process, a committee of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been formed to review LPG supply requests from non-domestic sectors. This committee is tasked with ensuring that the most pressing needs are met first, thereby optimizing the distribution of available resources.
