The new LPG rules effective May 1 may significantly tighten the booking and delivery systems for both domestic and commercial consumers in India, particularly in light of escalating fuel prices. As anxiety around fuel costs rises, partly due to geopolitical tensions related to the US-Israel war with Iran, the government is implementing measures that could further complicate access to these essential resources.

Recent documents indicate that oil marketing companies typically revise LPG prices at the beginning of each month. For instance, domestic LPG cylinder prices increased by ₹60 last month, while commercial cylinders experienced multiple hikes, including an initial rise of ₹144 in March followed by another increase of nearly ₹200 on April 1.

In addition to price adjustments, the new rules will extend the current lock-in period for booking LPG cylinders from the existing 25 days. Furthermore, OTP-based delivery and Aadhaar eKYC verification will now be mandatory for many users, which could add layers of complexity to the booking process.

Currently, online bookings account for nearly 98% of total requests for LPG cylinders, indicating a significant shift toward digital platforms among consumers. This trend suggests that any changes in booking protocols will have a widespread impact.

Sujata Sharma, a government spokesperson, advised citizens against panic purchasing of petrol, diesel, and LPG, assuring that efforts are underway to maintain availability despite rising costs. However, it remains uncertain whether LPG prices will see another increase on May 1.

The evolving landscape of LPG regulations reflects broader economic pressures and raises questions about accessibility for consumers amid changing market conditions. Stakeholders await further announcements regarding potential adjustments or clarifications on these new rules.

Recent Developments in LPG Gas Cylinder Pricing

On March 11, 2026, the price of LPG gas cylinders in India experienced significant increases, marking a critical moment for both consumers and businesses reliant on these essential energy sources. The price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder rose by ₹60, while the cost of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder surged by ₹144. This adjustment reflects ongoing challenges in the supply chain and broader geopolitical factors affecting the energy market.

In major cities across India, the new prices have been established as follows: in New Delhi, a domestic LPG cylinder now costs ₹913, and a commercial cylinder is priced at ₹1,884.50. Kolkata follows closely with domestic cylinders at ₹939 and commercial ones at ₹1,988.50. Mumbai’s prices are slightly lower, with domestic cylinders at ₹912.50 and commercial cylinders at ₹1,836. Meanwhile, Chennai sees domestic cylinders priced at ₹928.50 and commercial cylinders at ₹2,043.50, while Hyderabad reports the highest prices, with domestic cylinders at ₹965 and commercial cylinders at ₹2,105.50.

The price hikes come amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which is a crucial region for India’s LPG imports, accounting for approximately 60 percent of the country’s total demand. The geopolitical climate, particularly the Iran-US tensions, has raised concerns about the stability of LPG supplies, further complicating the situation for consumers and businesses alike.

As the price increases take effect, the Bangalore Hotels Association announced that “The supply of gas cylinders for commercial use has been stopped from today,” indicating a significant disruption for the hospitality sector. This has raised alarms among restaurant and hotel owners who depend on a steady supply of commercial LPG for their operations.

In contrast, PN Seth, Executive President of the All India LPG Distributors Federation, reassured the public by stating, “There is no shortage, and supply of commercial and domestic cylinders is continuing as usual.” This conflicting information highlights the uncertainty surrounding the current supply situation, leaving many consumers and businesses in a state of concern.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact duration of the LPG supply shortage and how geopolitical tensions may further impact future LPG prices. As the situation develops, stakeholders in the LPG market are closely monitoring these changes, which could have lasting effects on pricing and availability.

The implications of these price increases are significant, particularly for low-income households that rely on domestic LPG for cooking and heating. The rising costs may force families to seek alternative energy sources, potentially leading to a broader shift in energy consumption patterns across the country. Additionally, the hospitality industry, already recovering from the impacts of the pandemic, may face further challenges in managing operational costs amidst rising LPG prices.

As India navigates these complex challenges in the LPG sector, the focus will remain on ensuring a stable supply and addressing the economic impacts of rising prices on both consumers and businesses. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining how these factors will unfold and what measures may be necessary to stabilize the market.

Recent Developments in LPG Gas Cylinder Prices

On March 11, 2026, the price of LPG gas cylinders in India saw a significant increase, with the cost of a 14.2 kg domestic cylinder rising by ₹60 and the price of a 19 kg commercial cylinder increasing by ₹144. This change has raised alarms among consumers and businesses, particularly in urban centers where reliance on LPG is high.

Current Pricing Across Major Cities

As of now, the price of a domestic LPG cylinder in New Delhi stands at ₹913, while a commercial cylinder costs ₹1,884.50. In Kolkata, the prices are slightly higher, with domestic cylinders priced at ₹939 and commercial ones at ₹1,988.50. Mumbai’s prices are relatively lower, with a domestic cylinder costing ₹912.50 and a commercial cylinder priced at ₹1,836. Chennai and Hyderabad report even higher prices, with domestic cylinders at ₹928.50 and ₹965 respectively, and commercial cylinders at ₹2,043.50 and ₹2,105.50.

Supply Issues Affecting Businesses

The recent price hikes are compounded by reports of inconsistent supply of commercial LPG cylinders, which have particularly impacted restaurants and hotels. The Bangalore Hotels Association has stated, “The supply of gas cylinders for commercial use has been stopped from today,” highlighting the immediate challenges faced by the hospitality sector. In contrast, PN Seth, Executive President of the All India LPG Distributors Federation, reassured the public, saying, “There is no shortage, and supply of commercial and domestic cylinders is continuing as usual.” This conflicting information adds to the uncertainty surrounding the current situation.

Geopolitical Context

India imports approximately 60 percent of its total LPG demand, primarily from the Middle East. The ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, along with the broader Middle East crisis, have raised concerns about the stability of LPG supplies. These geopolitical factors are likely influencing the recent price increases and supply inconsistencies, making it a critical issue for both consumers and businesses.

Implications for Consumers and Businesses

The rise in LPG prices and the uncertainty surrounding supply could have significant implications for households and businesses alike. For consumers, the increased cost of domestic LPG cylinders may lead to higher household expenses, particularly for those who rely heavily on gas for cooking and heating. For businesses, especially in the food and hospitality sectors, the inconsistent supply of commercial LPG cylinders could disrupt operations and lead to increased costs, which may ultimately be passed on to consumers.

Looking Ahead

As the situation develops, details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact duration of the LPG supply shortage and the potential long-term impact of geopolitical tensions on future LPG prices. Stakeholders are closely monitoring these developments, as they will significantly affect the market and consumer behavior in the coming months.

The recent price increases for LPG gas cylinders in India reflect a complex interplay of local market dynamics and international geopolitical tensions. As consumers and businesses navigate these changes, the focus will remain on ensuring a stable supply and managing costs in an uncertain environment.

Recent Price Increases

The price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder in India has been increased by 60 rupees, now costing 913 rupees in Delhi. This adjustment follows a trend of rising costs attributed to geopolitical disruptions affecting fuel supply.

In other metropolitan areas, the new rates for LPG cylinders are set at 912.50 rupees in Mumbai, 939 rupees in Kolkata, and 928.50 rupees in Chennai. Additionally, the price for commercial LPG gas cylinders has risen by 115 rupees.

Impact on the Hospitality Sector

The increase in gas cylinder prices has led to an acute shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, significantly disrupting the hospitality sector in major cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Reports indicate that at least 20 percent of hotels and restaurants in Mumbai have been forced to shut down temporarily due to this shortage.

AHAR – Indian Hotels and Restaurants Association has expressed concerns over the availability of commercial cylinders, stating, “Despite being a basic operational requirement for restaurants and hotels, commercial cylinders are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain through proper channels.” This situation has raised alarms among business owners who rely heavily on these resources.

Government Response

In response to the ongoing crisis, the Indian government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to ensure the supply of natural gas is prioritized. Officials have also increased the LPG booking period from 21 days to 25 days in an effort to curb hoarding and manage supply more effectively.

As the situation develops, the government emphasizes that the supply of natural gas must be treated as a priority allocation, ensuring that it meets operational availability up to one hundred percent of the average past six-month gas consumption.

Looking Ahead

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact impact of ongoing geopolitical conflicts on future gas cylinder prices. Observers are closely monitoring the situation as it unfolds, with hopes that measures taken by the government will stabilize supply and pricing in the coming weeks.

Background on Gas Cylinder Prices

The price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder was hiked due to geopolitical disruptions to fuel supply. This increase has raised concerns among consumers and businesses alike, particularly in urban areas where reliance on LPG is high.

Recent Developments

Oil marketing companies have increased the prices of non-subsidised domestic LPG gas cylinders by 60 rupees across metropolitan cities in India. The new price for a 14.2 kilogram gas cylinder has been adjusted from 853 rupees to 913 rupees in Delhi. In Mumbai, the price will now be 912.50 rupees, while Kolkata and Chennai will see prices of 939 rupees and 928.50 rupees, respectively.

Additionally, rates for commercial LPG gas cylinders have increased by 115 rupees. This has particularly affected the hospitality sector, where an acute shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has been reported in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

Impact on the Hospitality Sector

According to the AHAR – Indian Hotels and Restaurants Association, “Despite being a basic operational requirement for restaurants and hotels, commercial cylinders are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain through proper channels.” This shortage has forced at least 20 percent of hotels and restaurants in Mumbai to shut down temporarily.

Government Response

In response to the ongoing crisis, the Indian government has increased the LPG booking period from 21 days to 25 days to curb hoarding. Furthermore, the Government of India has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to ensure the supply of natural gas, emphasizing that “the supply of natural gas must be treated as priority allocation and shall be maintained subject to operational availability to one hundred percent of their average past six-month average gas consumption.”

Looking Ahead

As the situation develops, observers are closely monitoring the impact of ongoing geopolitical conflicts on future gas cylinder prices. Details remain unconfirmed regarding how these factors may influence pricing and availability in the coming months.

Government Orders Increased LPG Production

The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced a 25-day inter-booking period to avoid hoarding and black marketing. This statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas underscores the urgency of the situation as the government responds to rising concerns over LPG availability amidst global supply chain disruptions.

In recent weeks, the conflict in West Asia has significantly impacted the global fuel supply chain, prompting the government to take decisive action. The Ministry has ordered oil refineries to ramp up LPG production specifically for domestic use, ensuring that households can access this essential resource without undue delay.

Challenges in Supply Chain

Despite these efforts, the situation on the ground remains challenging. Reports indicate that LPG supply disruptions have led to refill delays ranging from 2 to 8 days in Mumbai. This has raised concerns among residents who rely on LPG for cooking and heating. The government’s measures aim to alleviate these delays, but the effectiveness of these actions is yet to be fully realized.

Additionally, the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has been completely halted, which has adversely affected hotels and restaurants. P C Rao, a representative from the hospitality sector, noted that “only about 10% of hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru received their LPG supply today.” This stark statistic highlights the extent of the crisis facing non-domestic users of LPG.

Prioritizing Essential Services

In a bid to manage the limited supply effectively, the Ministry has prioritized non-domestic supplies from imported LPG for essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. This strategic allocation is intended to ensure that critical services continue to operate without interruption, even as the overall supply of LPG remains constrained.

To further streamline the process, a committee of three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been formed to review LPG supply requests from non-domestic sectors. This committee is tasked with ensuring that the most pressing needs are met first, thereby optimizing the distribution of available resources.

Looking Ahead

As the government continues to navigate the complexities of the LPG supply chain, the introduction of a 25-day inter-booking period is a significant step towards curbing hoarding and black marketing. However, the effectiveness of this measure will depend on public compliance and the ability of refineries to meet the increased production orders.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term outlook for LPG supply as geopolitical tensions evolve. The government’s proactive measures will be closely monitored as stakeholders across various sectors await further developments in the coming weeks.

Government Response to LPG Supply Challenges

The ministry has prioritised domestic LPG supply to households and introduced a 25-day inter-booking period to avoid hoarding and black marketing. This statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas underscores the urgency of the situation as the government responds to increasing demand for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) amidst global supply chain disruptions.

The recent geopolitical tensions, particularly the conflict in West Asia, have significantly impacted the global fuel supply chain. In light of these developments, the government has ordered oil refineries to ramp up LPG production specifically for domestic use. This move aims to ensure that households have reliable access to LPG, which is essential for cooking and heating.

To further manage the situation, a 25-day inter-booking period has been implemented for LPG refills. This measure is designed to prevent hoarding and black marketing, which have become pressing concerns as supply disruptions have led to refill delays ranging from 2 to 8 days in major cities like Mumbai. The government is keen to maintain a steady supply for the general public while addressing the needs of essential sectors.

Non-domestic supplies from imported LPG are being prioritized for critical sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. This strategic allocation reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that essential services continue to function smoothly despite the ongoing supply challenges.

A committee comprising three Executive Directors from Oil Marketing Companies has been established to review LPG supply requests from non-domestic sectors. This committee will play a crucial role in managing the distribution of LPG, particularly as the supply of commercial LPG cylinders has been completely halted, impacting businesses like hotels and restaurants.

P C Rao, a representative from the hospitality sector, noted the severity of the situation, stating, “Only about 10% of hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru received their LPG supply today.” This highlights the broader implications of the supply disruptions, as many businesses struggle to operate without adequate fuel supplies.

The government’s proactive measures aim to stabilize the LPG supply chain and ensure that households and essential services receive the necessary resources. As the situation evolves, further updates are expected regarding the management of LPG production and distribution.
