How it unfolded

In recent years, the landscape of wealth management in India has undergone a significant transformation, particularly with the rise of women investors. Historically, women in India have played a central role in managing household finances, but their engagement with capital markets remained limited. This trend has changed dramatically, with women now accounting for nearly 25% of India’s equity investor base.

As of now, women contribute around 33% of individual mutual fund assets under management (AUM). This shift is not merely a statistical anomaly; it reflects a broader cultural change where women are taking charge of their financial futures. Over the past five years, women’s AUM has grown by an impressive 147%, showcasing their increasing confidence and participation in investment activities.

The average folio size for women investors has also seen remarkable growth, increasing by 24% compared to just 6% for men. This disparity highlights a growing trend where women are not only investing but are also more committed to their investment strategies. In fact, 51% of women tend to stay invested during market volatility, compared to 43% of men, indicating a more resilient approach to investment.

Several companies have recognized this shift and are tailoring their services to cater to this demographic. For instance, CRED, a financial services company, has built a base of 3 lakh investors with nearly ₹33,000 crore in assets under management. Their innovative features, such as the new ‘Surplus’ option, allow investors to withdraw up to ₹4 lakh within five minutes, making it easier for women to manage their investments efficiently.

Moreover, platforms like Kuvera and Prometeia are also contributing to this trend by providing user-friendly interfaces and educational resources aimed at empowering women investors. These companies are not just facilitating investments; they are fostering a community where women can learn, share experiences, and grow their wealth.

Current statistics reveal that women in India typically live 2–3 years longer than men, which has significant implications for financial planning. This longevity necessitates a more robust approach to wealth management, as women need to ensure that their investments can sustain them through retirement and beyond.

The rise of women investors in India is not just a matter of numbers; it represents a fundamental shift in the financial landscape. As women continue to break barriers and take control of their financial destinies, their influence on investment trends and strategies will likely grow. This evolution matters not only for the women involved but also for the broader economy, as increased participation from women can lead to more diversified investment portfolios and a more resilient financial market.
