To facilitate this, the government established a 25-day inter-booking period to prevent hoarding and black marketing of LPG. As of now, City Gas Distribution entities must also maintain eighty percent gas supply to industrial and commercial consumers. However, oil refining companies have been ordered to reduce their gas allocation to approximately sixty-five percent of their past six-month gas consumption. Oil marketing companies have increased the prices of non-subsidised domestic LPG gas cylinders by 60 rupees across metropolitan cities in India. The new price for a 14.2 kilogram gas cylinder has been adjusted from 853 rupees to 913 rupees in Delhi. In Mumbai, the price will now be 912.50 rupees, while Kolkata and Chennai will see prices of 939 rupees and 928.50 rupees, respectively.

Additionally, rates for commercial LPG gas cylinders have increased by 115 rupees. This has particularly affected the hospitality sector, where an acute shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has been reported in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai.

Impact on the Hospitality Sector

According to the AHAR – Indian Hotels and Restaurants Association, “Despite being a basic operational requirement for restaurants and hotels, commercial cylinders are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain through proper channels.” This shortage has forced at least 20 percent of hotels and restaurants in Mumbai to shut down temporarily.

Government Response

In response to the ongoing crisis, the Indian government has increased the LPG booking period from 21 days to 25 days to curb hoarding. Furthermore, the Government of India has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to ensure the supply of natural gas, emphasizing that “the supply of natural gas must be treated as priority allocation and shall be maintained subject to operational availability to one hundred percent of their average past six-month average gas consumption.”
