Key moments

In a significant development for the Indian transportation sector, Indian Railways is set to enhance its operational capabilities with the commissioning of various projects aimed at improving connectivity and safety. The announcement comes as Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that “Indian Railways is transforming connectivity across the nation with nearly 25,000 trains running every day throughout the year.” This transformation is not just about the number of trains but also about the underlying infrastructure and technology that supports them.

As of the fiscal year 2025-26, Indian Railways achieved a remarkable milestone in freight transportation, loading an impressive 1,670 million tonnes. This achievement underscores the railway’s critical role in India’s logistics and supply chain, making it a backbone for the country’s economy. The production of over 1,500 locomotives and more than 6,600 LHB coaches further illustrates the scale of operations and the commitment to enhancing service quality.

One of the standout initiatives is the Kavach Automatic Train Protection System, which has been commissioned over 3,000 route kilometres. This state-of-the-art technology aims to significantly reduce the risk of accidents and improve the overall safety of train operations. The implementation of such advanced systems reflects Indian Railways’ dedication to adopting modern solutions to enhance passenger safety and operational efficiency.

In addition to safety measures, Indian Railways is also investing in communication infrastructure. Recently, the organization approved a ₹398.36 crore optical fibre project for the Ahmedabad and Ratlam divisions. This project will cover 1,929 route kilometres and is part of a larger ₹27,693 crore national plan aimed at establishing a robust railway communication backbone. The project is expected to lay high-capacity fibre optic cables, which will facilitate better communication and data transfer across the railway network.

The optical fibre initiative is particularly crucial as it aligns with the broader goals of digital transformation within Indian Railways. Enhanced communication capabilities will not only improve operational efficiency but also provide better services to passengers, including real-time updates and improved safety measures.

Shri Anurag Kapil, who has recently taken charge as Director (Finance) at NMDC Limited, brings a wealth of experience from his 26-year career across Indian Railways and other Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs). His expertise is expected to play a pivotal role in the financial management of ongoing and future projects within the railway sector.

As these developments unfold, the railway sector is poised for a transformative phase that promises to redefine travel and freight movement across India. The first reactions from officials indicate a strong commitment to not only maintaining but also enhancing the operational standards of Indian Railways. With these advancements, the railway network is set to become more efficient, safer, and more connected than ever before.
