What does the recent explosion outside the Punjab BJP office in Chandigarh signify for security in the region? The answer lies in the alarming claim of responsibility by Khalistani terrorist Sukhjinder Singh Babbar, who stated that he orchestrated the grenade attack on April 1, 2026.

The incident occurred around 5 pm when two individuals allegedly hurled a crude bomb or improvised explosive device (IED) before fleeing the scene. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported, though the blast did cause splinter damage to the windowpanes of a car and two scooters parked nearby.

Immediately following the explosion, police teams cordoned off the area to secure it and began an investigation. Senior police officials, including SSP Kanwardip Kaur, visited the site to assess the situation. Kaur noted, “We received information at around 5 pm that an explosion-like sound was heard near the Punjab BJP office.”

The attack has raised serious security concerns due to its proximity to the party office, prompting state BJP leader Vineet Joshi to describe the incident as a “serious concern.” He remarked, “A blast taking place near the party office is a matter of concern.”

Shrapnel fragments from the explosion have been recovered and are currently being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. A probe team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) has also been dispatched to collect further evidence.

This attack is believed to be linked to Khalistani terrorism and follows a recent police encounter involving a suspect in the killing of two policemen, highlighting the ongoing tensions in the region.

As authorities continue their investigation, the implications of this incident for local security and political stability remain to be seen. The situation is fluid, and details remain unconfirmed.

Punjab Police Operations and Recruitment Update

The Punjab Police have recently intensified their operations, recovering an RDX-laden IED, four pistols, and substantial quantities of narcotics in multiple raids. In total, 14 individuals linked to foreign-based terror and drug modules have been arrested, highlighting the ongoing battle against organized crime in the region.

Among the significant recoveries, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force seized 1,215 MDMA tablets and approximately 5.5 kilograms of various narcotics. These operations underscore the Punjab Police’s commitment to tackling drug trafficking and enhancing public safety.

In addition to these operations, the Punjab Police have announced a recruitment drive aimed at bolstering their workforce. A total of 3,297 vacancies for constable positions will be available in 2026, with the online application process set to commence on March 10, 2026.

Of the total vacancies, 2,522 will be in the District Police Cadre, while 775 positions will be available in the Armed Police Cadre. This recruitment initiative is part of a broader strategy to increase police personnel across various districts of Punjab.

Selected candidates for the constable positions will receive a starting salary of Rs 19,900 per month. To be eligible, candidates must have completed Class 12 or an equivalent examination, with a minimum age of 18 and a maximum age of 28 for applicants.

The Punjab Police’s recruitment drive is expected to attract a large number of applicants, reflecting the growing interest in law enforcement careers in the state. This initiative aims not only to fill vacancies but also to enhance the overall effectiveness of the police force in combating crime.

As the Punjab Police continue their operations against drug trafficking and terrorism, observers are keenly watching how these efforts will impact public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in the region.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific locations of the recent operations and the backgrounds of those arrested. However, the ongoing efforts by the Punjab Police signify a proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by crime and drug abuse in Punjab.
