AIIMS Mangalagiri has made significant strides in medical education and healthcare delivery since its inception. The institution, which began its MBBS course in 2018 with an initial intake of 50 students, now boasts a total of 748 students, with an annual intake of 125. Recently, AIIMS Mangalagiri celebrated the graduation of 49 MBBS graduates, five MD/MS postgraduate students, and four Post-Doctoral Certificate Course students, marking a pivotal moment for the institution.

In addition to its educational achievements, AIIMS Mangalagiri has established itself as a crucial healthcare provider in the region, having completed a remarkable 31 lakh outpatient department (OPD) consultations. The hospital currently sees a daily footfall of approximately 3,500 to 4,000 patients, underscoring its importance in meeting the healthcare needs of the community.

To further enhance its medical capabilities, AIIMS Mangalagiri has recently installed a Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing (NAAT) system, which is the first of its kind among all AIIMS institutions in South India. This advanced system, which cost around ₹1.73 crore, is designed to detect viral RNA/DNA with high sensitivity, enabling early identification of infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Ahanthem Singh, a key figure in the institution, remarked, “The NAAT system enhances safety by significantly reducing the diagnostic window period,” highlighting the technology’s potential to improve patient outcomes.

Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, emphasized the government’s commitment to the medical sector, stating, “The Union government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving utmost priority to the medical sector.” This statement reflects the broader efforts to bolster healthcare infrastructure across the country.

As AIIMS Mangalagiri continues to expand its services and educational programs, observers anticipate further developments in medical technology and patient care. The institution’s growth not only signifies progress in medical education but also a commitment to addressing the health needs of the population.

With the integration of advanced testing systems and a growing number of graduates, AIIMS Mangalagiri is poised to play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare in Andhra Pradesh and beyond.

Introduction Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disorder that affects the control of muscle

Introduction

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a genetic disorder that affects the control of muscle movement, leading to muscle weakness and atrophy. It is primarily caused by a deficiency in the survival motor neuron (SMN) protein, which is vital for the survival of motor neurons. The relevance of SMA has grown in recent years due to significant advancements in research and treatment options that offer hope to patients and families affected by this condition.

Current Events and Research

Recent studies have focused on gene therapy as a pioneering treatment for SMA. Notably, in December 2020, the European Commission granted marketing authorisation for Zolgensma, a one-time gene therapy that delivers a copy of the SMN gene directly to the patient’s cells, potentially allowing for natural production of the SMN protein. This treatment has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in infants and young children, providing a new lease on life for many.

Additionally, other therapies, such as Spinraza, which is an antisense oligonucleotide treatment, are already available and have shown to improve motor function in patients. The ongoing clinical trials for newer drugs, such as Risdiplam, are further expanding treatment horizons, highlighting the dynamic nature of SMA research.

Recent Advocacy and Awareness Campaigns

Alongside advancements in treatment, advocacy organisations are raising awareness about SMA. Events such as the annual SMA Awareness Month in August help educate the public and promote early diagnosis and intervention strategies, which can significantly improve outcomes for patients.

Conclusion

The significance of Spinal Muscular Atrophy lies not only in the advancements of treatment but also in the growing awareness and support within the community. With ongoing research and successful clinical trials, the future for SMA patients looks increasingly positive. It is imperative for both healthcare professionals and the public to remain informed, as awareness plays a critical role in early detection and treatment accessibility. The hope is that one day, SMA will not just be a manageable condition, but a fully treatable one.
