Bangladesh’s ODI Series Against Pakistan Begins

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the captain of the Bangladesh ODI team, is set to lead his squad in a crucial three-match ODI series against Pakistan, commencing on March 11, 2026, at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

This series comes at a critical time for Bangladesh, who have struggled recently, losing four of their last five ODI series. With the cut-off date for direct qualification to the 2027 World Cup approaching on March 31, 2027, the team is under pressure to perform.

Current Standing and Historical Context

Bangladesh is currently ranked 10th in the world and aims to secure a spot in the upcoming World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe. The team has played 15 ODIs since the last World Cup, with mixed results.

Historically, Bangladesh has faced Pakistan in 39 ODIs, winning only five of those encounters. The last time Bangladesh won against Pakistan at home was in April 2015, where they secured three victories. In total, Bangladesh has won three matches against Pakistan on their home soil out of 17 played.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s Perspective

Mehidy Hasan Miraz has expressed optimism about the upcoming series, stating, “In World Cups, wickets are very good and we want to start that habit from now on.” He emphasized the importance of not underestimating any opponent, saying, “You can’t take a team lightly since in international cricket, all teams are good.”

Despite the pressure, Miraz remains confident, asserting, “I am not worried. I’m not worried about it at all.” His leadership will be crucial as Bangladesh seeks to re-establish itself on the international stage, especially after missing the recent men’s T20 World Cup.

Pakistan’s Squad and Expectations

Pakistan arrives with a squad that includes six uncapped players, marking their first full 50-over tour of Bangladesh in over ten years. This series presents an opportunity for both teams to gauge their strengths and weaknesses ahead of the World Cup.

As the series unfolds, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if Bangladesh can turn their fortunes around under the guidance of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and secure their place in the World Cup.

The upcoming ODI series between Bangladesh and Pakistan marks a significant shift in team strategies and rankings. Bangladesh aims for World Cup qualification.

Background and Expectations

Before the upcoming ODI series, Bangladesh was positioned 10th in the ICC ODI rankings, with aspirations to improve their standing. They aimed to overtake the West Indies, currently ranked 9th, to secure direct qualification for the ODI World Cup 2027. The series against Pakistan, starting on March 11, 2026, at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, was anticipated to be crucial for their ambitions.

Changes in Team Composition

However, a significant change has occurred as Pakistan announced that they would rest their captain, Babar Azam, for this series. Instead, they opted to include six uncapped players, indicating a shift in strategy aimed at giving younger players experience. Among these, Sahibzada Farhan, Maaz Sadaqat, and Shamyl Hussain are set to make their ODI debuts in the series opener.

Immediate Effects on the Teams

This decision by Pakistan reflects a broader strategy to prepare for future competitions, including the World Cup. Shaheen Shah Afridi emphasized the importance of providing opportunities to young players, stating, “We want to give them chances against Bangladesh. When the time comes, they will understand their roles and what lies ahead, especially with the World Cup in mind.”

Bangladesh’s Position and Goals

For Bangladesh, this series represents a critical opportunity to solidify their ranking and improve their standing in international cricket. Currently, they are 22 points ahead of 11th-placed Zimbabwe, making this series vital for maintaining their position. Phil Simmons, the coach of Bangladesh, remarked, “The ultimate aim is to improve our standard in ODI cricket rather than getting too caught up in qualification mathematics.” This focus on performance over mere qualification reflects a mature approach to their cricketing strategy.

Expert Perspectives

As the series approaches, the contrasting strategies of both teams highlight the evolving landscape of ODI cricket. While Bangladesh seeks to enhance their competitive edge, Pakistan’s decision to invest in youth could reshape their future. The performances of the uncapped players will be closely monitored, especially given their impressive statistics in previous tournaments.

The Bangladesh vs Pakistan ODI series promises to be a pivotal event, not just for the teams involved but also for the broader context of international cricket. As both teams prepare for the matches, the outcomes could have lasting implications for their respective paths toward the ODI World Cup 2027.

India’s Winning Streak

“We are hoping this winning streak will continue till the next year’s ODI World Cup,” said Arun Singh Dhumal, IPL Chairman, reflecting on India’s recent triumph.

India made headlines by winning the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand by a significant margin of 96 runs. This victory marked a historic moment as India became the first team to secure the T20 World Cup title on home soil, adding to their previous wins in 2007 and 2024.

Bangladesh’s Ambitions

As India celebrates its success, Bangladesh is focused on its own aspirations for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027. “It is definitely going to be a new start. Whichever way you see it, our goal is to ultimately reach the 2027 World Cup,” stated Najmul Hossain Shanto, expressing the team’s determination.

Currently, Bangladesh sits at 10th in the points table for World Cup qualification, with the cut-off date for direct entry set for March 31, 2027. The competition is fierce, as only the top eight teams will secure a spot in the tournament, which will feature a total of 14 teams.

Host Nations and Future Prospects

South Africa and Zimbabwe are guaranteed spots as hosts for the ODI World Cup 2027, further intensifying the competition for other teams like Bangladesh. The upcoming months will be crucial for Bangladesh as they strive to improve their standing and secure a place in the prestigious event.

With the cricketing landscape evolving, both India and Bangladesh are gearing up for significant challenges ahead. As the World Cup 2027 approaches, the stakes are high, and the excitement continues to build among fans and players alike.

Sikandar Raza | Captain of Zimbabwe – Qualifying for the Super Eights was undoubtedly a significant milestone. Securing a spot in the next World Cup without going through qualifiers is a tremendous accomplishment. Despite our losses in the Super 8s, I can assure you that we have learned valuable lessons. After our first match, we improved. Following the second game, we made even more progress. These are the aspects that make me proud as a captain; I see my team evolving and growing. I couldn’t have asked for more, and I am immensely proud of the boys. As a leader, I feel a deep sense of pride in this group because I truly believe we improved with each game. When we return to the ICC event next time, I hope we will be even stronger. (if he and the senior players would still be a part of this set-up) Absolutely, it may seem distant for some of us, but we are aware of our situation and how we can move forward. For me, the culture we have established in the team is crucial; whether we are present or not, this team should operate smoothly. If Allah wills, we hope all the senior players remain fit and healthy, and we would love to be part of it. That said, the culture and relationships we have built with fans, both at home and abroad, indicate we are on the right path, and most importantly, we have instilled hope in people back home. (on the crowd support) The Chevrons have achieved something unprecedented. I believe we have inspired parents to encourage their children to pursue cricket as a primary sport, which will enhance our player pool and elevate our standards. Currently, Zimbabwe needs to focus on expanding its talent base. However, I believe what we have accomplished will lead to automatic improvements. (on the roadmap to the future) I can guarantee that the Zimbabwe management, including the MD and chairman, has been actively working behind the scenes. We have three home tours and one away tour scheduled for 2026, with the potential for two additional tours and three A-series as well. The management has been diligently planning without revealing too much; you will see more of Zimbabwe in the future. Right now, we need to take a moment to breathe, regroup, strategize, and outline our plans for the 2027 World Cup, but rest assured, the management is hard at work, and you will witness Zimbabwe more frequently. By the way, I came to bat when Zimbabwe was at 28/2.
