Vijaypat Singhania Passes Away at 87, Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Vijaypat Singhania, the former chairman of the Raymond Group, died in Mumbai at the age of 87, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that transformed the Indian textile industry and extended into various sectors.

Singhania, who led Raymond for two decades until 2000, was instrumental in expanding the company beyond textiles into synthetic fabrics, denim, steel, industrial files, and cement. His vision turned Raymond into a global fashion powerhouse, a testament to his innovative approach and business acumen.

Under his leadership, the company flourished, and he transferred his entire 37 percent stake to his son, Gautam Singhania, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership within the family. Singhania’s contributions to the industry were recognized when he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honors.

In addition to his business achievements, Singhania was a noted adventurer, holding a world record for the highest altitude achieved in a hot air balloon, reaching an impressive 69,000 feet. He also set a speed-over-time endurance record for microlight aircraft in 1988.

His commitment to education was evident during his tenure as chairman of the governing council of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, from 2007 to 2012, where he played a pivotal role in shaping future business leaders.

Singhania’s influence extended beyond business; he was made an honorary air commodore by the Indian Air Force in 1994 and served as the sheriff of Mumbai in 2006, reflecting his standing in society.

In a statement, the Raymond Group described him as “a visionary leader, philanthropist, and an inspiring personality, whose legacy will continue to guide and inspire generations.” This sentiment echoes the profound impact he had on both the corporate world and the community.

As the news of his passing reverberates through the business community, observers reflect on his significant contributions and the void his departure leaves. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any forthcoming tributes or memorials planned in his honor.
