The Zojila Pass, a notorious stretch in the Himalayas, has long been recognized for its treacherous conditions, particularly during winter months. Historically, this pass would remain closed for nearly five months, isolating Ladakh from the rest of India. However, the recent avalanche incident has brought the dangers of this route into stark focus.
On a fateful Friday afternoon, around 3 pm, an avalanche struck near Zero Point at an elevation of 3,528 meters (11,649 feet), burying several vehicles traveling from Srinagar to Kargil. This tragic event resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, with five others sustaining injuries. Rescue teams quickly mobilized, using JCBs to clear the snow and attempt to rescue trapped passengers.
As of now, seven bodies have been retrieved, but two individuals remain missing, and details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact number of vehicles caught in the avalanche. The avalanche also blocked the Srinagar-Kargil highway, further complicating rescue efforts.
The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh expressed deep concern over the tragedy, emphasizing the need for safety in such perilous conditions. Authorities have urged travelers to avoid the Zojila Pass until conditions stabilize, as the region is known for sudden weather shifts and steep gradients.
In light of this incident, the ongoing construction of the Zojila Tunnel, aimed at providing year-round connectivity between Srinagar, Drass, Kargil, and Leh, is more critical than ever. Once completed, the tunnel is expected to significantly reduce travel time from the current three to four hours across the pass to just 15 to 20 minutes, offering a safer alternative.
