Loan Deal for Garnacho
Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Alejandro Garnacho. The deal is structured as a loan with a conditional obligation to buy, a condition that Chelsea believes is easily achievable. This arrangement follows a recent British-record transfer where Morgan Rogers moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea for £117m.
Garnacho, an Argentina international winger, joined Chelsea last summer from Manchester United for £40m. He did not participate in Chelsea’s pre-season training to facilitate a move away from the club. The total financial package for Garnacho, including the loan fee, is understood to align with Chelsea’s valuation, which was reportedly £42.6m for the winger.
Financial Regulations and Transfer Complexity
The transfers between Chelsea and Aston Villa are complicated by financial regulations. Both clubs recently faced fines from UEFA for breaching financial sustainability rules. Chelsea, having entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA last year, is subject to stricter financial guidelines, even though they are not competing in European competitions this season.
Aston Villa’s sale of Morgan Rogers generated a significant accounting profit, estimated to be between £80m and £90m after various deductions. This profit is crucial for the club to comply with UEFA and Premier League financial constraints. However, UEFA rules consider multiple deals between two clubs within a 45-day period, especially if they involve similar payment obligations, as a ‘player exchange transaction’ or ‘swap deal’.
If the Garnacho and Rogers deals were classified as a single player exchange transaction, Villa’s profit would be reduced in UEFA calculations to the net difference in fees. To navigate these regulations, a loan with a conditional obligation to buy was chosen. UEFA is scrutinizing loopholes, and if a condition is deemed virtually certain, the player’s registration must be recognized as a permanent transfer from the loan agreement’s start, potentially leading to it being considered a player exchange transaction.
Garnacho’s Role at Aston Villa
Unai Emery, Aston Villa’s manager, reportedly admires Garnacho, and the club was seeking a winger. Garnacho’s first season at Chelsea saw him make 25 appearances in the Premier League, accumulating 1,217 minutes, averaging less than 49 minutes per game. His five goal involvements meant an average of one every 243 minutes.
In comparison, Rogers and Emiliano Buendia, who also played on the left flank for Villa last season, recorded more minutes and better goal involvement rates. Rogers averaged a goal involvement every 90 minutes, while Buendia averaged one every 190 minutes. Garnacho’s playing style, which typically involves hugging the touchline and staying wide, might require tactical adjustments to Emery’s system.
The loan arrangement provides Aston Villa with control, potentially reducing immediate costs and allowing them to assess Garnacho’s fit without a long-term commitment. Villa has previously used similar loan deals successfully, including signing Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United before opting against a permanent transfer. Chelsea hopes that the conditions for Garnacho’s permanent move to Villa are easily achievable, while also ensuring there is enough uncertainty in the deal to satisfy UEFA regulators.
