Australian Duo Headed to SA20
Mitchell Marsh and Matthew Short, two prominent Australian cricketers, are set to participate in South Africa’s domestic T20 tournament, the SA20, following the conclusion of their commitments in the KFC BBL|16 season. Both players were announced as marquee signings for the upcoming SA20 season.
Marsh will join Sunrisers Eastern Cape, while Short is slated to play for Pretoria Capitals. This marks their first appearance in the South African competition. Marsh, who captains Australia’s men’s T20 team, will be part of a franchise that also owns his current Hundred team, Sunrisers Leeds.
Clearance Subject to BBL Completion
Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that Marsh and Short will only be granted ‘No Objection Certificates’ (NOCs) to play in the SA20 once their respective BBL|16 obligations are fulfilled. International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations mandate that all players seeking to compete in a domestic tournament abroad must receive clearance from their home board, irrespective of their contract status.
The SA20 season is scheduled to commence on January 17, 2027. This date is one day after Short’s Adelaide Strikers are set to host Marsh’s Perth Scorchers in the final match of the BBL|16 regular season. A spokesperson for the Scorchers indicated that Marsh would remain with Perth until the end of their season, regardless of how far they progress in the tournament.
Should either the Perth Scorchers or the Adelaide Strikers advance to the BBL finals, which are scheduled from January 19-26, Marsh and Short’s departure for South Africa would be further delayed. Their participation in the opening SA20 match, where their respective South African franchises are set to face each other in Gqeberha, is contingent on their Big Bash teams not reaching the finals.
Recent Form and Contract Status
Both Marsh and Short enter the upcoming domestic summer in strong form. Marsh, who signed a three-year extension with the Scorchers until the end of BBL|17 in 2025, had a stellar run in the previous Big Bash season. He scored 360 runs, contributing to the Scorchers securing a record-extending sixth men’s title.
Following an injury-affected T20 World Cup campaign, Marsh continued his strong performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL), accumulating 563 runs at an average of 43 for Lucknow Super Giants. He has also made a significant impact in England’s Hundred competition, scoring 290 runs in five innings for Sunrisers Leeds.
Short, who is contracted to the Strikers until 2028, has also been in excellent touch. He recently hit consecutive scores of 60 not out and 71 for Welsh Fire in The Hundred. This followed a dominant conclusion to his Major League Cricket campaign, where he recorded back-to-back unbeaten scores of 94 and 121 in the playoffs for San Francisco.
Short opted to go freelance after his national contract was not renewed for the 2026-27 season, but he still requires CA’s clearance for overseas leagues. Several other Australian players, including Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Ashton Turner, and Mitch Owen, have previously featured in the South African competition after their BBL commitments.
The requirement for a No Objection Certificate applies to all players, regardless of whether they are contracted to their relevant member board or have retired from cricket.
