Squad Restructuring Underway
Chelsea currently have 41 senior players on their books, with the transfer window having 25 days remaining to address the situation. New manager Xabi Alonso aims to significantly reduce the squad size, particularly as the club will not be participating in European competitions this season. The goal is to offload 16 players by September to reach a more manageable squad of 25 senior players.

Additionally, full-back Pep Chavarria is reportedly close to joining from Rayo Vallecano. These additions contribute to the current large squad.
Defensive Departures and Midfield Uncertainty
A significant focus for squad reduction is the defence, particularly the centre-back position, where Chelsea currently has nine players. Alonso has indicated a preference for having only four or five centre-backs. Trevoh Chalobah is reportedly close to joining Como in a deal valued at £31m, including add-ons, while goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen is set to move to sister club Strasbourg on loan.
Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi are available for sale, with Napoli reportedly in talks for a loan deal with an option to buy for Badiashile. Crystal Palace is also reportedly pursuing Disasi. Mamadou Sarr is expected to depart on loan. These potential departures would leave Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill, Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, and Tosin Adarabioyo as the primary centre-back options.
In midfield, Enzo Fernandez is exploring his options, despite Chelsea reportedly being keen to retain him, with a reported price tag of £120m. Dario Essugo, previously expected to stay, is now open to a loan move for more regular playing time. The return of Mykhailo Mudryk, following a suspension, also presents a situation for the club to manage as they assess his fitness.

Midfielders include Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Valentin Barco, Romeo Lavia, and Jordan Henderson.
Attackers in the projected squad are Geovany Quenda, Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, Estevao Willian, Morgan Rogers, Jamie Gittens, Emmanuel Emegha, Joao Pedro, and Danny Welbeck. Several players, including Marc Guiu, Caleb Wiley, and Kendry Paez, are available for loan. Players like Badiashile, Disasi, David Datro Fofana, and Nicolas Jackson are listed as available for sale or have uncertain futures.
Chelsea‘s strategy under Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital has involved acquiring younger players on lower wages, who can be moved as needed. The club has spent £1.8bn on talent since BlueCo took over four years ago, while also generating nearly £1bn from player sales. This includes a reported £300m from Premier League sales, the highest in Europe during that period. The club expects similar sales this summer, with Chalobah‘s move potentially pushing sales beyond £150m, and Alejandro Garnacho‘s loan to Aston Villa including an obligation to buy worth approximately £40m next summer.
The club’s revenues are lower compared to other traditional ‘big six’ clubs, partly due to factors such as the size of Stamford Bridge and commercial performance. Player trading helps to offset this shortfall. Seven players, including Enzo Fernandez, Reece James, and Jordan Henderson, are currently on holiday after participating in the latter stages of the World Cup and are expected to return next week.
