Australia Confirms Playing XI
Australia captain Pat Cummins has announced the playing XI for the opening ICC World Test Championship match against Bangladesh in Darwin. The team selection includes Cameron Green and Beau Webster, who have both earned spots for the match commencing on Thursday at Marrara Stadium. The pace attack will feature Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, alongside veteran spinner Nathan Lyon.
This selection means that fast bowler Scott Boland will miss out, as will wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis. Jake Weatherald is set to open the batting with Travis Head, while Marnus Labuschagne will bat at number three. Cummins noted that Boland was unfortunate to miss out but indicated that he remains a key part of Australia’s plans for a busy upcoming Test schedule.
Cummins stated, “We were pretty certain we wanted Lyono (Lyon) in the side, so (it came down to) working out what the make-up of the quicks were.” He added that it was a tight call and that Boland understands his value, expecting him to play soon. Green is confirmed to bat at number five, ahead of Alex Carey and Webster, as the team aims to find the optimal middle-order combination.
Strategic Batting Order and Upcoming Schedule
The Australian captain also elaborated on the batting order strategy. “Kez (Carey) has won a few games for us at No.6,” Cummins mentioned, expressing satisfaction with the combination of Carey and Webster at six and seven. He believes Green is well-suited for the number five position, suggesting this setup allows the team to function most effectively. Cummins views having a player of Carey’s calibre potentially batting higher as a positive challenge.
The two-Test series against Bangladesh, which includes a second match scheduled for Mackay, marks the beginning of an extensive period for the Australian team. They are set to play at least 20 Tests over the next 12 months. This demanding schedule includes a series in South Africa in October, followed by five-Test showdowns overseas against India and England next year.
Carey, who has been a subject of discussion for his wicketkeeping performances, expressed his eagerness for the upcoming matches. He highlighted the professionalism and experience of the squad in preparing for each Test, stating, “To be honest, this group of players are really professional in the way that they look after themselves, really experienced with getting themselves up for each Test match and really match-hardened as well.”
Player Form and Expectations
The management of Australia’s bowling attack will be crucial given the compressed schedule. Cummins, Hazlewood, and Lyon are all returning to the squad after being sidelined. Cummins, at 33, is the youngest among Australia’s leading quintet of bowlers, which also includes Starc and Boland. All these players are part of the squad for the upcoming match.
All-rounders Green and Webster are expected to provide additional bowling options. Webster believes that having more bowling options within the top seven batters is beneficial. He has been fielding in the slips during training in Darwin and feels more confident in his role as a Test player after two years on the team’s fringes. Webster scored 71 not out and took three wickets in the New Year’s Test and has been consistent for Warwickshire recently.
Opener Weatherald faces significant pressure in the upcoming series, which begins in his hometown of Darwin. He is averaging 22 from five Tests. Weatherald acknowledged the challenges of external commentary on his performance, stating, “You’re naturally always looking for affirmations and people to respect what you’re doing, but at the same time, that’s a part of cricket.” The first Test is scheduled from August 13-17 in Darwin.
