Galle: KL Rahul retires hurt with cramps, India coach provides update

KL Rahul, the Indian opener, retired hurt during the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle due to cramps. Despite the incident, India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, indicated that Rahul is now “fine.” Rahul had scored 77 runs off 162 balls before leaving the field in the final session of play. His departure brought an end to a 150-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal.

Rahul initially showed signs of discomfort in his right hand before the cramps appeared to spread to his left hand. He was also seen limping as he exited the field. This occurred before the final session began, with Shubman Gill stepping in to bat in his place. The partnership between Rahul and Padikkal was crucial in helping India establish a strong position in the match.

Padikkal’s Century and India’s Strong Position

The highlight of India’s batting performance was Devdutt Padikkal’s unbeaten 131 runs, marking his first international century. Padikkal, who was returning to Test cricket after last playing against Australia in 2024, displayed confidence throughout his innings. Kotak praised Padikkal’s dedication, noting his hard work over the past two years. He also highlighted the progress of Sai Sudharsan, mentioning both players as effective new ball batters.

Padikkal reached his century in 134 balls, employing a variety of shots against Sri Lanka’s bowling attack. He was particularly effective against left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya, using sweeps, punches, and aggressive shots to maintain pressure on the bowlers. Kotak emphasised the importance of batters adapting to different phases of the game.

India concluded the day with a score of 288 for two. Padikkal remained unbeaten on 131, with Rishabh Pant at the crease on 27. Shubman Gill also made a contribution before being dismissed by Jayasuriya. The only concern for India was Rahul’s injury, though Kotak’s update aimed to alleviate worries about his condition. Padikkal also experienced dehydration later in the day but continued his innings.

Match Progression and Key Partnerships

Rahul and Padikkal’s 150-run second-wicket partnership was instrumental after Yashasvi Jaiswal was run out for 32 runs in the first session. India added 96 runs to their total in the second session. Padikkal, batting at number three in place of the injured Sai Sudharsan, effectively used his footwork against Sri Lanka’s spinners, ensuring the scoreboard kept moving.

Rahul provided stability at the other end, confidently handling the Sri Lankan attack, which struggled to find significant movement or turn from the pitch. Padikkal reached his half-century in the 37th over off Lahiru Kumara’s bowling, while Rahul achieved his half-century in the 43rd over off Keshara Nuwantha’s bowling. Although Asitha Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya created some moments of excitement, India avoided any major damage during the session.

Earlier, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, Jaiswal opened the scoring with a boundary in the first over. India reached 39/0 after 10 overs. However, Jaiswal was run out on the final delivery of the 11th over following a mix-up with Rahul, after slipping and being obstructed by fielder Keshara Nuwantha. Jaiswal was dismissed for 32 runs off 37 balls, including five fours. This marked his third run-out dismissal in Test cricket, having previously been run out against Australia in 2024 and against the West Indies last year.

India reached 54/1 after 13 overs before Rahul and Padikkal stabilised the innings, taking the team to 73/1. The pair continued to score, pushing India past the 100-run mark in the 26th over. India went into lunch at 101/1 after 27 overs, with Rahul unbeaten on 32 runs off 77 balls, including four fours and a six, and Padikkal not out on 35 runs off 49 balls, with five boundaries. The duo had established an unbeaten 54-run stand for the second wicket.

With India in a commanding position after the first day, attention will now focus on Rahul’s fitness for a return to the field and how Padikkal and Pant continue to build on the strong foundation.
