Loan Deal for Garnacho

Aston Villa has reached an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Alejandro Garnacho. The deal is structured as a loan with a conditional obligation to buy, a condition that Chelsea believes is easily achievable. This arrangement follows a recent British-record transfer where Morgan Rogers moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea for £117m.

Garnacho, an Argentina international winger, joined Chelsea last summer from Manchester United for £40m. He did not participate in Chelsea’s pre-season training to facilitate a move away from the club. The total financial package for Garnacho, including the loan fee, is understood to align with Chelsea’s valuation, which was reportedly £42.6m for the winger.

Financial Regulations and Transfer Complexity

The transfers between Chelsea and Aston Villa are complicated by financial regulations. Both clubs recently faced fines from UEFA for breaching financial sustainability rules. Chelsea, having entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA last year, is subject to stricter financial guidelines, even though they are not competing in European competitions this season.

Aston Villa’s sale of Morgan Rogers generated a significant accounting profit, estimated to be between £80m and £90m after various deductions. This profit is crucial for the club to comply with UEFA and Premier League financial constraints. However, UEFA rules consider multiple deals between two clubs within a 45-day period, especially if they involve similar payment obligations, as a ‘player exchange transaction’ or ‘swap deal’.

If the Garnacho and Rogers deals were classified as a single player exchange transaction, Villa’s profit would be reduced in UEFA calculations to the net difference in fees. To navigate these regulations, a loan with a conditional obligation to buy was chosen. UEFA is scrutinizing loopholes, and if a condition is deemed virtually certain, the player’s registration must be recognized as a permanent transfer from the loan agreement’s start, potentially leading to it being considered a player exchange transaction.

Garnacho’s Role at Aston Villa

Unai Emery, Aston Villa’s manager, reportedly admires Garnacho, and the club was seeking a winger. Garnacho’s first season at Chelsea saw him make 25 appearances in the Premier League, accumulating 1,217 minutes, averaging less than 49 minutes per game. His five goal involvements meant an average of one every 243 minutes.

Image caption,Garnacho was pictured wearing Marcus Rashford's Aston Villa shirt in 2025 Credit: bbc.com

In comparison, Rogers and Emiliano Buendia, who also played on the left flank for Villa last season, recorded more minutes and better goal involvement rates. Rogers averaged a goal involvement every 90 minutes, while Buendia averaged one every 190 minutes. Garnacho’s playing style, which typically involves hugging the touchline and staying wide, might require tactical adjustments to Emery’s system.

The loan arrangement provides Aston Villa with control, potentially reducing immediate costs and allowing them to assess Garnacho’s fit without a long-term commitment. Villa has previously used similar loan deals successfully, including signing Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United before opting against a permanent transfer. Chelsea hopes that the conditions for Garnacho’s permanent move to Villa are easily achievable, while also ensuring there is enough uncertainty in the deal to satisfy UEFA regulators.

The deal for Alejandro Garnacho was agreed on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.

Potential investment in Liverpool

Reports indicate that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has engaged in discussions regarding joining a consortium that aims to acquire a stake in Liverpool Football Club. This development follows earlier news that a group led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia had expressed interest in purchasing a minority stake in the Premier League club. The consortium is reportedly seeking to buy approximately 30% of Liverpool.

The interest from Bhatia’s consortium, which has reportedly made a provisional offer of £1.35bn for a stake from Fenway Sports Group (FSG), has generated considerable discussion among supporters. This level of interest is typically reserved for significant player signings, highlighting the importance of potential new investment for the club.

The individuals involved

Amit Bhatia, who is the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, was previously a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years. He relinquished his stake in the west London club recently, a move that appears to clear the way for him to lead the consortium targeting Liverpool. His family’s wealth is estimated at around £23bn, and he is believed to have secured financial backing from his father-in-law.

Jeff Bezos, the founder of the e-commerce giant Amazon, is currently the fourth-richest person globally, with an estimated net worth of $256.9bn, according to Forbes. He stepped down as Amazon‘s chief executive in 2021 to become executive chairman and still owns 8% of the company. Bezos also holds ownership of The Washington Post and aerospace company Blue Origin.

Jeff Bezos Credit: bbc.com

While Bezos has not yet invested in sports, he has explored such opportunities in the past. In 2023, he was linked with a takeover of the NFL franchise Washington Commanders and had also considered purchasing the Seattle Seahawks. However, he ultimately did not submit offers for either team. Sources familiar with the current discussions suggest that any deal with Bhatia’s consortium could see Bezos receive equity in Liverpool.

FSG’s strategy and club valuation

FSG confirmed Bhatia’s interest in acquiring a “strategic minority investment” in Liverpool. This comes after FSG sold a minority stake to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity in 2023. That previous deal helped address revenue losses incurred during the pandemic and facilitated debt repayment for projects such as the club’s training centre in Kirkby and the Anfield Road stand expansion.

The current pursuit of investment differs, as the club is reported to be in a strong financial position. In February, Liverpool announced record revenues exceeding £700m, making them the highest-placed Premier League club in the Deloitte Football Money League. The proposed deal with the Bhatia consortium reportedly values Liverpool at around £4.5bn, a valuation higher than that of Manchester United when Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquired a 25% stake in that club two years ago.

Fans with banners at Anfield Credit: bbc.com

The prospect of new investors has prompted questions about FSG‘s long-term intentions for Liverpool. Since acquiring the club in 2010 for £300m, FSG has overseen significant success, including winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League, alongside investments in the training ground and stadium development. The current situation, with a new head coach, Andoni Iraola, and changes at senior management levels, including Michael Edwards stepping down as FSG‘s CEO of football, adds to the uncertainty.

Liverpool supporter Neil Atkinson, CEO of The Anfield Wrap, highlighted the importance of understanding the motives behind such investments. He stated that questions “should be asked whenever anyone is interested in paying money for an involvement in any Premier League club.” He also noted that the “why” behind such investments might not be singular or consistent across all parties.

An FSG spokesperson confirmed the discussions, stating that “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

Post-match confrontation at World Cup final

Following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, a confrontation occurred on the pitch involving several players and coaching staff members. Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada, along with assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were reportedly involved in the fracas. During the incident, Paredes appeared to push Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat. Unused substitute Gavi attempted to intervene but was forced to the ground by Almada. Paredes also pushed the Barcelona midfielder by placing his hand in the Spaniard’s face.

FIFA has since appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the events. Any player or coach found to be involved could face a suspension, and the Argentine Football Association might also incur a fine. Despite the severity of the incident, Gavi expressed his view that Paredes should not be suspended.

The confrontation took place after Spain secured the World Cup trophy with Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal in the 106th minute. The celebrations were overshadowed by the chaotic scenes that unfolded on the pitch. Earlier in the match, Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez had been dismissed after receiving a second yellow card in second-half added time.

Gavi and Ibrahimovic react to the incident

Gavi shared his perspective on the incident, stating, “I don’t think [Paredes] should be suspended.” He acknowledged that the image might not be ideal for younger audiences but suggested that a more physical and aggressive aspect is part of football. Gavi believed that the most logical course of action would have been for Paredes to be sent off during the match itself, rather than facing a retrospective suspension.

Roberto Ayala, Argentina’s assistant coach, also commented on his involvement, stating he would apologize to Spain’s Dani Olmo. Ayala explained that he appeared to strike the Barcelona midfielder in the face, describing it as “more of a push than a punch.” He clarified his intention, saying, “When the match ended, I saw a scuffle in the middle of the pitch and I went over to stop it from escalating, because that’s not who we are.” Ayala took responsibility for his actions, emphasizing that his goal was simply to separate those involved.

Former Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic offered a strong condemnation of Leandro Paredes’ actions. Speaking during his punditry role, Ibrahimovic described Paredes’ behavior as “unprofessional.” He stated, “Paredes can be happy there was no player like me on the pitch. If I had been there, I would have headbutted him and been sent off.” Ibrahimovic also questioned the reaction of Spain’s players, expressing surprise that they did not do more to defend their teammates during the confrontation. He remarked, “I don’t know what the Spanish players are doing? They are just watching another player hit their team-mate.” Broadcast footage showed Nahuel Molina striking Rodri, and Paredes appearing to kick Eric Garcia before grabbing Gavi and dragging him to the ground.

FIFA investigation and disciplinary action

Initially, there were reports on FIFA’s commentator information system that Leandro Paredes had been sent off by referee Slavko Vincic for pushing Garcia. However, this report was later corrected, and FIFA confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken during the match itself. Despite this, FIFA has opened an investigation into the events that occurred after the final whistle, indicating that retrospective disciplinary action against Paredes remains a possibility.

Paredes has since made a statement on social media, thanking Argentina’s supporters and expressing pride in representing his country, but he did not directly address the altercation. His message conveyed a heavy heart regarding the team’s inability to bring joy to their country, while also expressing pride for their efforts and for flying their flag at the top once again.

The ongoing FIFA investigation will assess the actions of all involved, including Paredes, Molina, Almada, and Ayala. The outcome could lead to suspensions for players or coaches and a potential fine for the Argentine Football Association.

The incident has sparked debate about player conduct and the role of officials in managing post-match confrontations in major tournaments like the World Cup.

The disciplinary and ethics prosecutor appointed by FIFA will continue to assess what transpired after Spain’s 1-0 victory.

By Priya Menon — 22 July 2026 — 4 min read

Manchester United continues to explore options for a third midfield signing this summer. While the club has already secured Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the search for an additional recruit persists. Initially, a move for Alex Scott appeared unlikely due to pricing considerations, and the club did not seem to be prioritising a ‘marquee’ signing in that position. Recent indications suggested a target in a similar price range to their earlier acquisitions.

However, the situation surrounding Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni could potentially alter Manchester United‘s transfer strategy. Despite previous attempts to sign other midfielders, United has maintained an open stance regarding Tchouaméni. There has been no active attempt to acquire him from the Spanish giants, but United is reportedly positioned to act swiftly if Real Madrid were to unexpectedly decide on a sale.

Tchouaméni’s Status at Real Madrid

The prospect of Real Madrid selling Tchouaméni has always been a key factor, with any potential move likely to materialise later in the transfer window. Manchester United‘s earlier midfield signings provide them with the flexibility to observe developments for a longer period. Reports had suggested that the trail for the France international had cooled following an agreement for a contract extension at the Bernabeu.

Jose Mourinho, the manager, has expressed a desire to retain the midfielder, and Real Madrid‘s statement denying interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez seemed to reinforce the idea of an unchanged midfield. However, the potential arrival of another high-profile midfielder at Real Madrid could trigger changes. The club’s decision to put out a statement regarding Enzo Fernandez was seen by some as an indication of stability in their midfield plans.

Tchouaméni‘s contract with Real Madrid runs until 2028. He has reportedly regained significant standing within the team in recent months, especially after being played in his natural midfield position by Xabi Alonso and later Alvaro Arbeloa. This followed a period where he often filled in at central defence due to numerous injuries within the squad, which could have impacted his development and routine.

Manchester United wants to recruit Aurélien Tchouaméni Credit: frenchfootballweekly.com

Despite Real Madrid‘s overall season, Tchouaméni‘s individual performances were noted as strong. His future at the club had been a subject of discussion, particularly as Real Madrid was anticipated to undergo significant squad changes.

Potential Midfield Shake-up

Jose Mourinho has reportedly advocated for changes in the midfield. While players like Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde are considered integral, and Bernardo Silva has recently joined, there were considerations regarding potential departures. If a midfielder were to leave, it was thought to be between Eduardo Camavinga and Tchouaméni. Camavinga has been linked with clubs in the Premier League and PSG, while Tchouaméni, a starter for both Real Madrid and the national team, holds a very high market value.

Manchester United had reportedly identified Tchouaméni as a priority in a transfer market experiencing significant activity, similar to the transfers of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. There was even a point where Real Madrid considered using Tchouaméni as a bargaining chip in a potential deal for Michael Olise. However, Mourinho‘s desire to keep him and establish him as a key player, despite a reported altercation with Valverde, appears to have solidified his position.

According to one report, an agreement has been reached for Tchouaméni to extend his contract. This development suggests that a transfer saga involving the player might be resolved for the time being.

Rodri’s Influence on Transfer Dynamics

Another factor that could influence the midfield market is Rodri. The player has openly expressed his admiration for Real Madrid, and with one year remaining on his contract at Manchester City, there have been renewed discussions about his potential move to the Spanish capital since a recent final. Manchester City has offered the player a new contract, but it remains unsigned.

Rodri is scheduled for surgery for a minor issue, indicating that his transfer situation could still evolve. Florentino Perez, Real Madrid‘s president, is reportedly keen to sign the World Cup-winning captain of Spain. He could potentially acquire Rodri without a transfer fee next summer if the player chooses not to extend his stay at Manchester City.

Should Real Madrid decide to pursue Rodri this summer, and if Rodri pushes for the transfer, it could necessitate a midfield sale at the Bernabeu. In such a scenario, Tchouaméni is considered the most likely player to command a substantial transfer fee, even if Real Madrid might prefer to sell Eduardo Camavinga instead. While a deal for Tchouaméni currently seems improbable for Manchester United, a series of interconnected events this summer could potentially bring the transfer back into consideration.

Manchester United has launched their new away kit for the 2026/27 season, featuring a blue jersey with wavy stripes inspired by the 1988 kit.

By Rahul Sharma — 22 July 2026 — 3 min read

The 2030 World Cup is set to be a unique tournament, spanning six countries and three continents. The initial matches will take place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, marking the 100th anniversary of the tournament, which began in South America in 1930. Following these opening games, teams will travel approximately 6,000 miles for the group stage matches in Europe and North Africa. The main host nations for the majority of the tournament are Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

Uruguay will host the opening match on June 8, 2030, at the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo. This stadium holds historical significance as the only one FIFA has designated a Historical Monument of World Football. The subsequent two games will unfold the same weekend in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Asunción, Paraguay. All six host nations will automatically qualify for the tournament. FIFA has indicated that extra rest days will be incorporated into the schedule to accommodate the transcontinental travel.

Host nations and key venues

Spain, hosting for the first time since 1982, will stage the largest portion of the games, with matches in Madrid and Barcelona, among other cities. Portugal will host for the first time, with games scheduled for Lisbon and Porto. Morocco will make history as the first North African host and the second on the African continent, with matches spread across six cities from Tangier to Agadir. Outside Casablanca, in Benslimane, Morocco is constructing the Grand Stade Hassan II, a 115,000-seat arena shaped like a traditional Moroccan tent.

The location of the final match, scheduled for July 21, 2030, is yet to be determined. Three stadiums are vying to host: Madrid‘s Santiago Bernabéu, a rebuilt Camp Nou in Barcelona, and Morocco‘s new Grand Stade Hassan II. FIFA is expected to make an official decision in December 2026.

Early contenders for the title

With the 2030 World Cup on the horizon, early power rankings suggest several teams are well-positioned to challenge for the title. Spain, as the defending champions and co-hosts, are considered early favourites. Their squad is expected to feature players like Unai Simón (32), Gavi (25), Pedri (27), Nico Williams (27), and Lamine Yamal (22). Other talents such as Dean Huijsen (25) and Cristhian Mosquera (25) could also play significant roles.

France, with Zinedine Zidane reportedly taking over as coach, is another strong contender. Key players projected to feature include Mike Maignan (34), Dayot Upamecano (31), Aurélien Tchouaméni (30), and Kylian Mbappé (31). England also shows promise, with a core of players like Declan Rice (31), Jude Bellingham (26), and Bukayo Saka (28). However, questions remain regarding their striker options and goalkeeping position.

Morocco, benefiting from strong recent performances and hosting duties, is expected to field players such as Achraf Hakimi (31), Chadi Riad (26), and Ismael Saibari (29). Their success in the recent U-20 World Cup also highlights emerging talent. Argentina, despite the anticipated absence of Lionel Messi, will look to players like Julián Álvarez (30), Lautaro Martínez (32), and Enzo Fernández (33) to lead their campaign. Portugal‘s squad could include Diogo Costa (30), Gonçalo Inácio (28), and João Neves (25), though some veteran players may be past their prime. Norway, with Erling Haaland (29) leading the attack, is also expected to be a formidable opponent, supported by players like Andreas Schjelderup (26) and Martin Ødegaard (31).

The 2030 World Cup is planned to feature 104 matches over approximately six weeks, with the final taking place on July 21, 2030.

By Priya Menon — 22 July 2026 — 7 min read

Chelsea has officially announced the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033 and is set to join Xabi Alonso’s squad for the upcoming 2026/27 season. Rogers expressed his enthusiasm, stating that Chelsea is the biggest club in London and one he has admired since childhood. He also highlighted his excitement for the project with the new manager, the current players, and the club’s future direction.

The transfer concludes a pursuit that spanned over two years, with Chelsea agreeing to a record fee for a British player, reportedly valued at £117 million. This club-record deal generated considerable attention when the news broke, just hours before Rogers participated in England’s 6-4 victory over France in the World Cup third-place play-off match. The agreement for Rogers was reportedly finalised within 48 hours, following formal negotiations that began on a Thursday, a day after England’s semi-final defeat against Argentina. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly contacted Rogers on Friday to discuss his plans, and personal terms were agreed upon the same day.

The pursuit of Rogers

Rogers arrives at Chelsea having established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. During his tenure at Aston Villa, his contributions included goals and assists that led to 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He played a role in guiding the Midlands club to a top-four finish before they secured the UEFA Europa League trophy last season. Since making his senior England debut in November 2024, Rogers has become a regular for the Three Lions, earning 22 caps and representing his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

The deal involved key figures from Chelsea’s ownership and sporting director team, including Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, and Sam Jewell. Club captain Reece James reportedly spoke with Rogers while they were in the England camp, and close friend Cole Palmer also reached out via text message. These interactions conveyed to Rogers the seriousness of Chelsea’s interest in securing his signature. The swiftness of the club’s actions was also viewed positively by Rogers, with the final stages of negotiations concluding on a Saturday.

Rogers had attracted interest from several major clubs both in England and internationally. His performance last season, which included 14 goals and 11 assists for Villa, made him a prime target. However, with five years remaining on his contract, Aston Villa required significant persuasion to part with such a valuable asset. For several weeks, Arsenal appeared to be the frontrunners for his signature, but ultimately, Rogers chose to join their London rivals.

Why Chelsea won the race

One of Chelsea’s primary objectives this summer was to acquire a versatile attacker capable of immediately impacting the first team. While a wishlist was compiled, Rogers was considered the top choice from the outset. Both Chelsea and Alonso value his ability to play across various attacking positions, including on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, a ‘false nine’, and deeper in midfield. His physical attributes, size, and attitude are also highly regarded. Rogers is seen as someone who can integrate well into the dressing room, known for his humility and lack of ego. Sources from Villa, despite their disappointment at his departure, commended his humility and potential to develop into a key leader, acknowledging his emotional intelligence. It is hoped that he will contribute to forming one of Europe’s most exciting attacking lineups, alongside players like Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Estevao.

During his phone call with Rogers, Alonso reportedly conveyed his strong desire to bring him to the club since his appointment in May and outlined how he envisioned using him within the team. Rogers reportedly felt a connection with the Spanish manager and was impressed by the passionate pursuit from a figure with such a strong reputation as both a player and a manager. According to one source, Rogers came away from their conversation believing that Xabi Alonso was genuinely impressive.

Chelsea had shown interest in Rogers even before he joined Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024. This interest intensified, particularly after he scored at Stamford Bridge in a Carabao Cup tie that same month. Villa’s director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, was involved in negotiations for the player at the time. Middlesbrough had included a 20 percent sell-on clause in that initial deal. Chelsea’s interest in Rogers resurfaced in January 2025 and again last summer, but Villa had been reluctant to sell. Manager Unai Emery reportedly considered Rogers to be the club’s best player and among the top five in the Premier League. In November, the England international was offered a third new contract in less than two years.

Last summer, Emery reportedly spoke with Rogers, requesting that he stay for one more season, as Villa believed he was too important to lose. His versatility was particularly crucial given the club’s inability to strengthen attacking positions at that time. Those close to Villa suggested that Rogers’ departure would necessitate finding a suitable replacement. This consideration influenced their pursuit of West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen before he signed a new contract. One Villa player reportedly described Rogers as being like “Unai’s son,” highlighting him as a player developed by Emery.

Villa internally acknowledged that selling key players was necessary to sustain progress, a point discussed with Emery ahead of the summer. The club has seen several high-value departures, including Moussa Diaby, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey, Jhon Duran, and Youri Tielemans. Sources close to Villa’s situation felt that selling Rogers was the most straightforward way to reshape the squad and comply with financial regulations. While Rogers was not actively seeking a move, several sources close to the player and the club believed that this summer was the opportune time for his departure, allowing Villa to maximise his transfer value.

Joe Shields, who had known Rogers since their time together at Manchester City’s academy, where Shields served as head of recruitment and talent management from 2018, was also involved. Rogers joined City’s academy from West Bromwich Albion in 2019, and they worked together until Shields moved to Southampton in 2022. However, the decision to sign Rogers had unanimous support within Chelsea. Chelsea maintains a strong relationship with Villa, which was seen as an advantage in the negotiations. The London club informed Rogers’ representatives earlier in the summer that they would not make a move for him while England still had a chance to win the World Cup, aiming to avoid any distractions. Villa also preferred not to sell before the tournament, believing that Rogers’ involvement would further increase his market value.

Despite their reluctance to lose Rogers, Villa recognised that bringing in new signings and adhering to UEFA financial regulations would require the sale of key assets. From the outset, Villa insisted that Rogers would not be sold cheaply. This stance was influenced by other significant transfers in 2025, which set an early benchmark. The club-to-club negotiations with Chelsea were relatively swift because Chelsea accepted Villa’s valuation. A day before Chelsea reached a verbal agreement for the player, some of Rogers’ teammates at Villa had reportedly heard of his desire to move to West London.

Villa had anticipated Rogers’ departure once England exited the World Cup. They subsequently secured a replacement, signing Johan Manzambi from Freiburg. Villa intends to use the funds from Rogers’ sale to acquire a fast winger, with West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville and Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye among the leading targets. While Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was reportedly an admirer, and PSG had informed Rogers’ representatives that he was on a list of attacking midfielders they were tracking, Arsenal was considered Chelsea’s primary competition. England teammates Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice reportedly engaged in efforts to convince Rogers to join Arsenal, and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard also spoke with him.

Sources close to Rogers indicated that manager Mikel Arteta also spoke directly with the player. Arsenal reportedly came away with the impression that they were Rogers’ preferred choice. During these discussions, Rogers reportedly understood that he would primarily be used as a left winger rather than a No 10. However, this was not a deal-breaker. Chelsea did not promise Rogers the No 10 role either but did suggest he would be utilised in various positions, a flexibility that appealed to him. Aston Villa co-owner and chairman Nassef Sawiris ultimately made the final decision regarding Rogers’ transfer. An informal meeting with the Arsenal hierarchy in the U.S. provided an opportunity to discuss a potential transfer, though Villa and Arsenal remained some distance apart in their valuations.

Discussions for Garnacho’s Move

Aston Villa has initiated discussions to acquire Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea. The proposed deal involves a potential loan, with Chelsea seeking a permanent aspect to be included in any agreement for the winger. Reports indicate that Chelsea is prepared for Garnacho’s sale during the current transfer window.

This development follows a significant transfer between the two clubs, where Morgan Rogers moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea. Garnacho, an Argentina winger, was made available for sale by Chelsea last month. Despite an initial valuation, the club remains open to a move that could see him depart permanently under specific conditions, even if it begins as a loan arrangement.

If the transfer is finalised, Garnacho would become Aston Villa’s fourth signing in a busy summer. The Midlands club has already welcomed Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Modou Keba Cisse. Player sales from Villa have also been notable, with Youri Tielemans, Donyell Malen, Enzo Barrenechea, and Lewis Dobbin having left the club.

Garnacho’s Impact and Future

Chelsea has been looking to offload Garnacho, who joined the club last September from Manchester United. His contribution at Stamford Bridge has been limited, with one Premier League goal recorded. The arrival of Rogers and Sporting winger Geovany Quenda has further highlighted the need to streamline the squad.

Garnacho has not rejoined pre-season training as he works towards a resolution regarding his future. Xabi Alonso, at his recent unveiling, mentioned that Chelsea is collaborating with the player and his representatives to find a suitable solution for all parties involved.

Beyond Aston Villa, Roma has also expressed interest in signing Garnacho. Additionally, the former Manchester United winger has attracted attention from clubs in the Saudi Pro League.

Morgan Rogers Credit: skysports.com

Squad Dynamics and Financial Considerations

Analysis suggests that Garnacho faced challenges in making a significant impact during his first season at Chelsea, particularly on an already crowded left-hand side. He accumulated Premier League minutes across appearances last term, averaging less than 49 minutes per game. This figure is less than what Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendia managed in the same position for Villa last season, sharing responsibilities on the left flank.

The average goal involvements also show a difference. Garnacho’s goal involvements averaged one every 243 minutes, compared to Rogers’ average of one every 90 minutes and Buendia’s every 190 minutes. Should Villa sign Garnacho, it might necessitate adjustments to Unai Emery’s system when the Argentine is on the pitch. While Buendia and Rogers offer versatility, able to play on either flank and move centrally, Garnacho tends to hug the touchline and stay wide. This would require Emery to adapt his attacking patterns or for Garnacho to show greater adaptability.

Chelsea has been active in player sales this summer, with outgoings helping to cover the cost of acquiring Rogers. The club has generated funds from selling players such as Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos, and Tyrique George, with compensation from Manchester City for poaching Maresca also contributing. While players like Reece James, Palmer, and Joao Pedro are considered untouchable assets, other first-team squad members are expected to depart for substantial fees, including Garnacho, Nicolas Jackson, and Trevoh Chalobah.

Despite not participating in European competitions this season, Chelsea remains subject to UEFA’s financial regulations. Last summer, the club entered a four-year settlement agreement with UEFA for breaching regulations. This window, Chelsea aims to demonstrate progress in financial sustainability. The club generated significant funds from player sales last summer, and with the need to move on several surplus defenders and at least one striker, this summer could also see considerable trading activity.

Birthday celebrations and personal life

Erling Haaland, the Manchester City striker, recently marked his 26th birthday. He spent the occasion focusing on family and relaxation after a demanding period on the international stage. The Norwegian forward shared a glimpse of his celebrations on social media, captioning his post simply with the word “Nice” as he enjoyed a quiet vacation.

His girlfriend, Isabel Haugseng Johansen, also shared a series of photos to commemorate the day, including a message that read “Love you.” The couple, who generally maintain a private life away from public scrutiny, appeared relaxed as Haaland recharged before returning to the Etihad Stadium.

Haaland and Johansen share a connection stemming from their upbringing in Norway, where they both played for the local club Bryne FK. This stability in his personal life is considered a factor in his ability to manage the pressures of being a key player for Manchester City.

International impact and future aspirations

Despite the birthday festivities, Haaland has been reflecting on Norway’s World Cup campaign. He described the experience, which included a quarter-final exit against England, as a highlight of his career. Haaland noted that the team’s performance resonated with the public in Oslo, stating that seeing the national support was deeply moving. He expressed that putting Norway on the map touched him significantly.

Haaland’s first World Cup appearance saw him achieve seven goals, marking a prolific debut for a player in the tournament since Grzegorz Lato in 1974. He hopes his achievements will inspire a new generation of Norwegian talent to believe they can compete at the highest levels of football. He remarked that the current generation is “fantastic” and hopes it motivates young people in Norway to aspire to play on the biggest stage representing their country.

Born in Leeds on July 21, 2000, while his father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was playing in the Premier League, Erling Haaland was raised in Bryne, Norway, from the age of three. His mother, Gry Marita Braut, was a Norwegian heptathlon champion. Haaland also has several cousins who are professional footballers, including Jonatan Braut Brunes, Emma Braut Brunes, and Albert Braut Tjåland.

During the 2026 World Cup, Haaland wore “Braut Haaland” on his jersey to honor his mother. This choice reflects a common practice in Norwegian culture of including both maternal and paternal surnames. His astrological sign is Cancer, which is associated with family, homeland, and roots.

Off-field interests and career milestones

Haaland’s off-field interests include meditation, which he reportedly uses to maintain calmness. He has also publicly shared his practice of taping his mouth at night to promote deeper nasal breathing, which he believes aids in sleep and recovery.

In 2016, Haaland recorded a rap video with Erik Botheim and Erik Tobias Sandberg under the name Flow Kingz. Their track, “Kygo Jo,” was based on the Norwegian DJ. During the recent World Cup, a house remix of “Kygo Jo” was released and reached the number one spot in Norway.

Haaland holds the record for scoring nine goals against Honduras in the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland in 2019, a match Norway won 12-0. He also became the fastest player to reach 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League, achieving this in just 49 matches. Haaland joined Manchester City in May 2022, and his contract was extended in 2025, valid until 2034.

By Rahul Sharma — 21 July 2026 — 5 min read

New footage showing Lionel Messi’s pre-match and half-time team talks has reignited discussions regarding the pressure on Argentina leading up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. The videos, captured in the dressing room and players’ tunnel before the final against Spain, have led to widespread fan speculation after Messi repeatedly urged his teammates to “forget everything” and concentrate solely on football.

The footage gained significant traction online following Argentina’s 0-1 defeat to Spain after extra time at MetLife Stadium. This performance was described as one of their most subdued under coach Lionel Scaloni. Spain largely controlled the game, while Argentina struggled to create significant attacking opportunities, registering their first shot on target late in extra time.

Pre-Match Messages and Player Reactions

One video, recorded just before the team exited the dressing room, shows Messi attempting to calm a visibly tense squad. He instructed his teammates, saying, “Calm, let’s stay calm, lads. Let’s think about playing, nothing else. Stay calm. Let’s forget about everything, let’s forget about everything. Let’s focus on playing.” This message, delivered by the Argentina captain, aimed to bring a sense of focus to the team.

Another clip from the tunnel captured Messi reiterating a similar message just before kick-off. He was heard telling his teammates, “Come on, boys, let’s forget what happened, as if nothing had happened.” The specific wording of these messages drew considerable attention from supporters, particularly because several players, including Lisandro Martinez and Enzo Fernandez, appeared unusually subdued and emotional.

The match saw Martinez leave the field due to injury during the first half, while Fernandez received a second yellow card late in normal time, leading to his dismissal. These incidents, combined with the team’s overall performance, have fueled fan theories about the circumstances surrounding the final.

Half-Time Rally and Post-Match Reflections

Messi’s leadership continued into the half-time interval. Television cameras captured him delivering another motivational speech before Argentina returned for the second half. “Come on, lads. Personality, people, personality. We’ve always had it, so why wouldn’t we have it now? We have the personality to play,” Messi urged his teammates.

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez also contributed to the effort to inspire the squad, delivering an equally passionate message. He stated, “With heart, lads. Let’s move forward, not backward… Only cowards play backward.” Despite these rallying cries, Argentina found it difficult to assert themselves in the game. Ferran Torres ultimately scored the winning goal in the 106th minute.

The unusual nature of Messi’s comments has prompted numerous theories across social media platforms. Adding to the intrigue, Lionel Scaloni, the coach, commented after the final that “things happened” before the match but declined to provide further details “out of respect for the tournament.” This statement further intensified speculation among fans.

Following the defeat, Messi shared his feelings in an emotional Instagram message. He wrote, “The pain is immense, and it will take time for this wound to heal. But I also hold on to all the good… this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals.” Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul also addressed the situation, dismissing accusations regarding Argentina’s tournament run and criticizing those who spread “baseless conspiracy theories” during the World Cup.

Unconfirmed Theories and Ongoing Debate

The viral video has deepened the mystery surrounding the final. Journalist Eduardo Feinmann relayed claims suggesting that Messi’s call to ‘forget everything’ was connected to rumors circulating before the match. These claims, however, remain unconfirmed. The video, which went viral a day after Argentina’s loss to Spain, shows players in the dressing room as Messi attempts to calm them.

Many online users observed that the squad appeared more serious than usual, with worried expressions and a mood that differed significantly from their demeanor throughout the rest of the tournament. One user on X commented, “As someone who’s not into conspiracy theories at all, I think this pep talk from Messi is really strange and completely anticlimactic. The worried faces and the low energy. This Argentina side isn’t like that. Unsettling.” Another user added, “Everyone is focusing on the sentence. Yes, it’s odd, but the worst thing is something else: the faces, the body language. Flat, lifeless, beaten. I’m not even talking about anything external, but something was going on with a large part of the team.”

Some users also referenced Lionel Scaloni’s post-final remarks about pre-match incidents, which he chose not to elaborate on “out of respect for the tournament.” This fueled further speculation about a potential incident leading up to the game. Among the circulating theories were unsubstantiated claims alleging that the match had been fixed, though no evidence or official sources have supported these.

Another theory emerged, suggesting that a rumor about FBI agents being at the stadium to arrest AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia had caused unease within the Argentine delegation and reached the players. According to Feinmann, this rumor could have been the reason behind Messi’s plea to “forget about everything.” However, this explanation has not been officially confirmed by the AFA or any member of the squad. As of now, neither Lionel Messi, Lionel Scaloni, nor any other members of the Argentine delegation have publicly clarified what the captain was referring to when he asked the team to leave “everything” behind before the final.

The video continues to generate debate among fans and speculation about the events leading up to the match.

The recent World Cup campaign has reportedly overshadowed previous concerns regarding ticket prices, travel distances between venues, and the perceived decrease in quality due to the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams. Despite these discussions, FIFA is expected to declare the tournament a success, leading to considerations for an even larger future event.

According to economic thinking, if a 48-team World Cup is successful, then a 64-team tournament would be even more so. This idea is based on the assumption that football fans will continue to support the event regardless of price or circumstances. While a 64-team World Cup is not yet a formal proposal, discussions around it have already begun.

Expanding the World Cup format

Concerns about the dilution of tournament quality by including more teams are often considered secondary to audience size and revenue generation. From an organisational perspective, a 64-team World Cup, or even one with 128 teams, is seen as manageable. This is partly due to the established practice of multi-country hosting, a concept that elite sports, especially football, have adopted and developed over time.

The World Cup has a history of expansion, starting with 13 teams, then stabilising at 16 participants until 1978. It expanded to 24 teams from 1982 to 1994, then to 32 teams from 1998 to 2022, and most recently to 48 teams.

A hypothetical 128-team tournament could involve dividing teams into eight groups of 16 teams, effectively creating eight mini-World Cups, each hosted by a different country. Each mini-tournament would feature a group stage followed by knockout rounds up to the semi-finals. The 16 teams that advance from these eight host nations would then proceed to a ninth host country for a final phase.

This final phase would consist of four groups of four teams, followed by semi-finals and a final, ultimately determining a champion, runner-up, third-place, and fourth-place finisher. Such a tournament could potentially last around 41 days, which is only slightly longer than the 2026 World Cup’s 39 days. Qualification stages would still be necessary for 120 teams, with the first-phase host nations automatically qualifying.

Morocco’s pivotal role in 2030 bid

Luis Rubiales, former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), has emphasised Morocco’s critical contribution to the successful joint bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. He refuted suggestions that Morocco was merely a secondary partner in the bid.

During a phone interview, Rubiales stated that the bid’s success would have been impossible without Morocco. He explained that a joint bid from Spain and Portugal alone would not have garnered sufficient support within FIFA to win the hosting rights. Morocco was deemed essential because a bid without them would have faced strong competition from Saudi Arabia, which would have had the backing of the Arab world and much of Africa.

Rubiales’s comments challenge the idea that Morocco joined the project only after Spain and Portugal encountered difficulties in strengthening their candidacy. His remarks suggest that Morocco’s increasing influence in international football played a significant role in transforming the Spain-Portugal bid into the successful Spain-Portugal-Morocco project that will host the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Morocco’s growing influence is attributed to its expanded football infrastructure and strengthened diplomatic ties within FIFA and CAF over the past decade, establishing itself as a major host for international tournaments.

Financial and logistical considerations

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has acknowledged the possibility of further expansion beyond the 48-team format, with a 64-team World Cup being among the ideas under consideration. Such an expansion would necessitate more stadiums, hotels, transport, and potentially a longer tournament duration.

The financial implications are also significant. Making qualification easier for more nations could reduce the commercial value of qualifying competitions while increasing the importance of FIFA’s flagship event. This could lead to regional confederations becoming more reliant on FIFA’s distributions, shifting more financial influence towards the global governing body.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has expressed opposition to further expansion, questioning where it might end and its impact on qualifiers. The 2026 tournament, hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, is the first to move away from the 32-team format since 1998, expanding to 48 nations and 104 matches over more than five weeks. A 64-team World Cup, retaining the same basic structure, would involve 128 matches, which is 24 more than in 2026 and double the total under the old 32-team format.

This could add approximately another week to a tournament already lasting over five weeks, unless the schedule is compressed or more games are played simultaneously. The plans for Spain, Portugal, and Morocco to host most of the 2030 finals, with Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay each hosting a single opening-round match, highlight the complexity of accommodating multiple teams across several nations.

An expanded World Cup would also intensify player welfare concerns due to an increased workload and place greater strain on the already congested international calendar and domestic leagues. The French Football Federation had anticipated spending 24.5 million euros at this year’s World Cup, with the federation president indicating that reaching at least the semi-finals would be necessary to avoid financial losses.

If a 48-team tournament already stretches the finances of participating federations, a longer 64-team event could further increase these costs. The debate over competitive balance, tournament length, and fan costs will likely intensify with any further expansion.
