Chelsea has officially announced the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033 and is set to join Xabi Alonso’s squad for the upcoming 2026/27 season. Rogers expressed his enthusiasm, stating that Chelsea is the biggest club in London and one he has admired since childhood. He also highlighted his excitement for the project with the new manager, the current players, and the club’s future direction.

The transfer concludes a pursuit that spanned over two years, with Chelsea agreeing to a record fee for a British player, reportedly valued at £117 million. This club-record deal generated considerable attention when the news broke, just hours before Rogers participated in England’s 6-4 victory over France in the World Cup third-place play-off match. The agreement for Rogers was reportedly finalised within 48 hours, following formal negotiations that began on a Thursday, a day after England’s semi-final defeat against Argentina. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly contacted Rogers on Friday to discuss his plans, and personal terms were agreed upon the same day.

The pursuit of Rogers

Rogers arrives at Chelsea having established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. During his tenure at Aston Villa, his contributions included goals and assists that led to 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He played a role in guiding the Midlands club to a top-four finish before they secured the UEFA Europa League trophy last season. Since making his senior England debut in November 2024, Rogers has become a regular for the Three Lions, earning 22 caps and representing his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

The deal involved key figures from Chelsea’s ownership and sporting director team, including Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, and Sam Jewell. Club captain Reece James reportedly spoke with Rogers while they were in the England camp, and close friend Cole Palmer also reached out via text message. These interactions conveyed to Rogers the seriousness of Chelsea’s interest in securing his signature. The swiftness of the club’s actions was also viewed positively by Rogers, with the final stages of negotiations concluding on a Saturday.

Rogers had attracted interest from several major clubs both in England and internationally. His performance last season, which included 14 goals and 11 assists for Villa, made him a prime target. However, with five years remaining on his contract, Aston Villa required significant persuasion to part with such a valuable asset. For several weeks, Arsenal appeared to be the frontrunners for his signature, but ultimately, Rogers chose to join their London rivals.

Why Chelsea won the race

One of Chelsea’s primary objectives this summer was to acquire a versatile attacker capable of immediately impacting the first team. While a wishlist was compiled, Rogers was considered the top choice from the outset. Both Chelsea and Alonso value his ability to play across various attacking positions, including on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, a ‘false nine’, and deeper in midfield. His physical attributes, size, and attitude are also highly regarded. Rogers is seen as someone who can integrate well into the dressing room, known for his humility and lack of ego. Sources from Villa, despite their disappointment at his departure, commended his humility and potential to develop into a key leader, acknowledging his emotional intelligence. It is hoped that he will contribute to forming one of Europe’s most exciting attacking lineups, alongside players like Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Estevao.

During his phone call with Rogers, Alonso reportedly conveyed his strong desire to bring him to the club since his appointment in May and outlined how he envisioned using him within the team. Rogers reportedly felt a connection with the Spanish manager and was impressed by the passionate pursuit from a figure with such a strong reputation as both a player and a manager. According to one source, Rogers came away from their conversation believing that Xabi Alonso was genuinely impressive.

Chelsea had shown interest in Rogers even before he joined Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024. This interest intensified, particularly after he scored at Stamford Bridge in a Carabao Cup tie that same month. Villa’s director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, was involved in negotiations for the player at the time. Middlesbrough had included a 20 percent sell-on clause in that initial deal. Chelsea’s interest in Rogers resurfaced in January 2025 and again last summer, but Villa had been reluctant to sell. Manager Unai Emery reportedly considered Rogers to be the club’s best player and among the top five in the Premier League. In November, the England international was offered a third new contract in less than two years.

Last summer, Emery reportedly spoke with Rogers, requesting that he stay for one more season, as Villa believed he was too important to lose. His versatility was particularly crucial given the club’s inability to strengthen attacking positions at that time. Those close to Villa suggested that Rogers’ departure would necessitate finding a suitable replacement. This consideration influenced their pursuit of West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen before he signed a new contract. One Villa player reportedly described Rogers as being like “Unai’s son,” highlighting him as a player developed by Emery.

Villa internally acknowledged that selling key players was necessary to sustain progress, a point discussed with Emery ahead of the summer. The club has seen several high-value departures, including Moussa Diaby, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey, Jhon Duran, and Youri Tielemans. Sources close to Villa’s situation felt that selling Rogers was the most straightforward way to reshape the squad and comply with financial regulations. While Rogers was not actively seeking a move, several sources close to the player and the club believed that this summer was the opportune time for his departure, allowing Villa to maximise his transfer value.

Joe Shields, who had known Rogers since their time together at Manchester City’s academy, where Shields served as head of recruitment and talent management from 2018, was also involved. Rogers joined City’s academy from West Bromwich Albion in 2019, and they worked together until Shields moved to Southampton in 2022. However, the decision to sign Rogers had unanimous support within Chelsea. Chelsea maintains a strong relationship with Villa, which was seen as an advantage in the negotiations. The London club informed Rogers’ representatives earlier in the summer that they would not make a move for him while England still had a chance to win the World Cup, aiming to avoid any distractions. Villa also preferred not to sell before the tournament, believing that Rogers’ involvement would further increase his market value.

Despite their reluctance to lose Rogers, Villa recognised that bringing in new signings and adhering to UEFA financial regulations would require the sale of key assets. From the outset, Villa insisted that Rogers would not be sold cheaply. This stance was influenced by other significant transfers in 2025, which set an early benchmark. The club-to-club negotiations with Chelsea were relatively swift because Chelsea accepted Villa’s valuation. A day before Chelsea reached a verbal agreement for the player, some of Rogers’ teammates at Villa had reportedly heard of his desire to move to West London.

Villa had anticipated Rogers’ departure once England exited the World Cup. They subsequently secured a replacement, signing Johan Manzambi from Freiburg. Villa intends to use the funds from Rogers’ sale to acquire a fast winger, with West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville and Paris Saint-Germain’s Ibrahim Mbaye among the leading targets. While Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was reportedly an admirer, and PSG had informed Rogers’ representatives that he was on a list of attacking midfielders they were tracking, Arsenal was considered Chelsea’s primary competition. England teammates Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice reportedly engaged in efforts to convince Rogers to join Arsenal, and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard also spoke with him.

Sources close to Rogers indicated that manager Mikel Arteta also spoke directly with the player. Arsenal reportedly came away with the impression that they were Rogers’ preferred choice. During these discussions, Rogers reportedly understood that he would primarily be used as a left winger rather than a No 10. However, this was not a deal-breaker. Chelsea did not promise Rogers the No 10 role either but did suggest he would be utilised in various positions, a flexibility that appealed to him. Aston Villa co-owner and chairman Nassef Sawiris ultimately made the final decision regarding Rogers’ transfer. An informal meeting with the Arsenal hierarchy in the U.S. provided an opportunity to discuss a potential transfer, though Villa and Arsenal remained some distance apart in their valuations.
