The Election Commission of India has ordered a complete re-poll in all 285 polling booths of the Falta constituency, scheduled for May 21, 2026, from 7 AM to 6 PM, following serious allegations of violence and EVM tampering during the initial voting phase.
This decision marks one of the most extensive re-poll exercises in recent electoral history in West Bengal and comes after the original polling on April 29, 2026, which saw an impressive voter turnout of approximately 93.48% in the South 24 Parganas district. However, disturbances reported during that phase prompted the Election Commission to act decisively.
The Commission cited multiple complaints of electoral malpractices as the basis for its action. Observers note that such a comprehensive re-polling effort underscores ongoing concerns regarding electoral integrity in the region. “The decision to conduct re-polling stems from multiple complaints of electoral malpractices,” sources say.
In preparation for the upcoming re-polling, voters have been reminded to carry valid identity proof, which may include a Voter ID, Aadhaar card, passport, driving license, or PAN card. Additionally, the Election Commission plans to deploy 165 additional counting observers to oversee the counting process on May 24, 2026, ensuring transparency and security throughout the proceedings.
Officials have not disclosed specific measures that will be implemented to prevent further disruptions during the re-polling; however, it is understood that enhanced security protocols will be in place. The deployment of additional observers aims to create an intimidation-free environment for voters.
The upcoming re-polling not only reflects immediate concerns about electoral processes but also raises questions about broader systemic issues within West Bengal’s political landscape. As this situation unfolds, it remains crucial for stakeholders to monitor how these developments might influence voter confidence in future elections.
