കേരള സിവില് ഡിഫന്സ്: Kerala Civil Defence Responds to Misinformation on Heatwave Warnings

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has taken a firm stance against viral WhatsApp messages that falsely claim temperatures in Kerala will reach between 45°C and 55°C starting from late April. These alarming messages have circulated widely, prompting concerns among residents about potential heat-related dangers.

KSDMA officials have clarified that no such warnings have been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) or any Kerala authorities regarding temperatures soaring to 55°C. The misinformation has raised alarms not only about extreme heat but also about supposed risks of phone explosions and fuel tank issues, which KSDMA has labeled as scientifically baseless.

In response to the viral messages, the KSDMA emphasized that spreading misinformation about heatwave warnings is a punishable offense under the Disaster Management Act. The authority has urged citizens to rely solely on official websites and verified social media pages for accurate weather updates.

The misleading messages included various safety precautions, advising people to avoid staying outdoors and not to fill fuel tanks completely. In light of this, KSDMA has issued official guidance for the public, detailing heat safety measures that should be observed during the expected rise in temperatures.

As temperatures are projected to increase from April 29 to May 12, with the peak reaching as high as 55°C, the KSDMA has outlined specific times to avoid direct sunlight, recommending that individuals stay indoors between 11 AM and 3 PM.

Officials have reiterated the importance of public awareness in combating misinformation, stating, “Spreading misinformation is a punishable offense under the Disaster Management Act.” They have also reassured the public that they will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.

As the summer months approach, the KSDMA’s proactive measures aim to ensure that citizens remain informed and safe. Observers note that the authority’s efforts to clarify the situation are crucial in maintaining public trust and preventing panic.

In the coming weeks, KSDMA plans to enhance its communication strategies to ensure that accurate information reaches all corners of the state, thereby minimizing the impact of misinformation on public safety.
